Claiming Universal Tax Credits or SSP while awaiting grant

Hi All,

Thank you in advance for answers and feedback.

There is a mention that self employed if effected by COVID-19, go on sick, Universal Tax credits can be claimed. Or if work has dried up, UTC can be claimed.

I wanted to seek clarification as to what the situation is if client already gets  Working Tax Credits & Child Tax credits as opposed to Universal Tax Credits, and does not want to move to UTC?

If your client doesn't want to claim Universal Credit s/he doesn't have to.
Some important points
- If your client claims UC, the existing claims will be stopped and they will receive nothing until the UC claim is processed
- UC is not particularly well-designed for the self-employed. There is some good guidance here:
