Share trading

Client using Interactive Investor share trading

Didn't find your answer?

I have a client using Interactive Investor Share trading.

The listing of the transactions comes out as a csv file  but they have sold shares this year that go back to many years.

Has anybody come across this broker and how do you get the purchase price of the shares that have been sold (in last tax year)

I have thought about excel and filtering but am concerned about missing any lines as they are not always in the same format,   any help gratefully accepted !

Am currently wading through paper but thinking they must have a system of being able to locate the purchases to match to the sold shares for CGT purposes.   The shareholder can't seem to find anything on their system but being a large brokerage,  I would expect there to be some system of matching these up.

I don't have access to the individuals account obviously.   Any ideas.

Just tell the client to contact Interactive Investor for a CGT report.

"but they have sold shares this year that go back to many years."

If any of these purchases pre-date client's use of this platform, then obviously it'll have no knowledge of purchase price.
In that event (as with many IHT scenarios where portfolio has been held for maybe 30/40+ years), the only option is to write to the Registrar of each of the relevant share issuers. They will charge you for this service (and can be extremely slow to respond even pre-Covid), so you may have to make a value judgement as to whether this is worth it.
In between those two extremes, you can find the 'share-price' (usually for at least the last 5 years) of publicly quoted shares on the internet ... but of course your client may not have paid the mid-point price on a particular day, so this is only an indicator.

No idea with III but with HL if you still hold a share and click on your portfolio list on the left the name of same it then gives you a list of all past transactions for that name going way back, in fact if you were really stuck on say HL you could wait 30 days, repurchase 1 share and the back holding history would then be available.

No idea if III works likewise but may be worth asking.

I had big issues with II and moved away from them. Took them months to migrate my holdings, they did end up giving nominal compensation.

Transaction report from year dot is probably all that is available from them. Third-party apps such as Sharepad have HMRC reports (CGT/div income), but the transactions obviously have to be religiously entered first. Even then, events like the following aren't automatic.

Problem with some shares are things like share splits. Tesco immediately springs to mind with their 15/19 consolidation earlier this year. So you might not find the purchased share quantity matching the sold quantity. There should be lines in the report showing that though.

Then you've got name changes/takeovers, etc. Reconciling Bovis/Galliford Try/Vistry for example.

Oh, and don't forget Thos Cook, Carillion, etc. for offsetting capital losses.

In cases where Dividends have been issued, they will have been recorded as income as and when they occurred, so this might give some clue as to the length of time shares have been held.

If they were bought on the same platform then you can ask for a contract note. I'm not sure what their data retention policies are for their clients.

Does your client have any emails from the past confirming the shares were bought? If so, you may be lucky and find the email even mentions the price and date.
