should tax filer include a journal module?

should tax filer add a journal module

Didn't find your answer?

Hiope you all had a great Christmas ?

Curently i make adjustments via bookkeeping software or spreadsheet and and import to taxfiler.  However , i am begining to convince myself that taxfiler need to include a jounal facilities in the accounts module so you can work directly on taxfiler and then then email client / or export journal in the form of excel to post in bookkeeping software .

what your view ?

Just post your journal in the bookkeeping software, Taxfiler can post the journal you need for the Corporation Tax liability, if needed, direct to supported bookkeeping software. Otherwise what is the Journal you are wishing to be able to post in Taxfiler?

Imho, journals are no use unless they offer a full bookkeeping system.

I’ve not used taxfiler, although I did take a quick look at it recently when someone mentioned it didn’t have certain functionality in the tax module. This included me taking a look at its pricing.

Without being dismissive, I think the name and the pricing both suggest it’s a cheap way of getting your figures ‘filed’ in statutory formats, not a fully functioning accounts preparation package. That’s fine - it’s not for us (although we could probably save thousands of pounds a year) but it’s a product with a brief, for a market.

If they start offering a more comprehensive package then inevitably prices will rise and then it becomes something it was never supposed to be, surely?

yes I think this would be useful but not for the reason you suggest - after you upload a TB there are always some changes you need to make and it would be quicker to post a quick journal than getting the old calculator out.

However a) I would not hold your breath for TF to make that change and b) there are far more useful and urgent things they need to address, for example the ability to alter category descriptions and autofilling data from HMRC

I reckon that would be dangerous. There's a risk that your bookkeeping software won't agree with your tax software. I'd prefer to keep them separate.

In practice that always happens anyway, it depends on what book-keeping software you use but with Sage for example it is long winded to download and format the TB and upload to TF, so there is no way that I would upload to TF, work out the tax and add anything else I have forgotten and then post to Sage and redo the download/format/upload - its much quicker just to pop the CT figure directly into TF or make any adjustments directly on the TF TB and have Sage at the side and make the journals as I go - having a journal option in TF would save a bit of time entering the data in TF.
Same applies to most software, even with the fetch TB option

I actually asked them if they're planning to add a journal facility, cos I agree it would be immensely handy for micro companies, which make up most of my client base.
And - you guessed it - they're not.

The beauty of Taxfiler originally is that was a no-frills tax return and basic accounts package.
If they keep adding more to it, it only encourages Iris to keep increasing the price (and we all know they need very little of that) and if it edges towards the price of the other non-IRIS packages it's not so attractive.

Perhaps all bookkeeping software should include an accounts and tax module. Oh wait, thats what some of them are trying to do. Then you complain because their offerings are crap. Then you complain because they are too expensive.

Better if my TV could cut the grass whilst I am watching a film.

I adjust all journals in my Excel TB, then copy and paste into Taxfiler. Then agree the Corp tax and do other journals in Excel

We used to use Tax Filer, but ended up going with BTCSoftware because of their two way journal integration.
