Slight face-lift for AWeb

Small changes to the site

Good morning one and all,

Your friendly site editor here. As you may have noticed, the site has had a slight facelift this morning. Here’s what has changed:

  • The removal of the ‘let us know about you’ box on the homepage and the addition of an extra news story
  • A slight tweak to the top story background colour
  • An updated version of our ‘industry insights’ page (formally industry updates). This has now been moved to below the top stories on the homepage
  • The latest blogs and columns displayed on a separate ribbon on the homepage
  • A new, extended ‘about the author’ section at the bottom of articles

That’s about all I can see for now. If I spot anything else I’ll be sure to let you know.

If you find any glitches do feel free to add a comment below or contact me by private message.

I am aware that the changes do not address the core issues that have been raised on Any Answers over the past few days. All feedback is read and collated, and I hope to have some good news for everyone on that front very soon.

All the best and have a good day,

Tom

I like the Industry Insights on the homepage.

It would be good if most of the homepage had that format, instead of the Cbeebies theme.

Agreed. A headline for the article, and a brief summary of the article. So much better than a headline and a picture. A picture which does nothing to add understanding beyond the headline.
Example: On today's homepage there's a headline about a Tesco fraud trial. The picture is of a Tesco sign on a storefront. This helps who? And how?
Another headline is 'Simple assessments spun out'. The picture is some washing machines. Because they spin. Again, what does this achieve? How is this picture better than giving a summary of the article contents?

I think you'll find that those are dryers. In our launderette the washing machines have their "holes" in the top.

I hope you're not calling me a monkey? I understand that that sort of thing is frowned upon by the moderators.

Mind you, I do rather miss the 80s.

Can we not have a way of jumping to the last post or easily seeing what date the last post in a thread was made?

Thanks Anne Robinson, the 'jump to last post' request is definitely on the list.

Would definitely second date and time of last post in a thread.

Can I also suggest a time limit for amending posts.

Allowing posts to be amended indefinitely means that thread content and particularly contentious comments can be changed or deleted to alter their original context.

I suggest that all posts should be locked after 1 hour which should allow ample time to make any changes desired and then once locked, only the moderators can remove or change them.

Could we ban anybody that doesn't have a sense of humour please Tom. Get rid of all the dullards.

I was waiting for it.

Though I didn't expect it to be so vicious.

I am now going to report you to the real moderators (you'd only be a Micky Mouse PCSO anyway), and I'm also going to tell my dad on you - he'd beat the [***] out of your dad!

Less pictures, more words = easier to see and less scrolling down so all good. Small picturres and more words on the main stories would be good too, we are (in the main) not simpletons on the site.

It would be good on the key "anyanswers" page to actually see the top 3 questions when you load it, rather than 50% of the page being taken up by the extraordinarily large banner and the other 50% being taken up by the rather redundant "editors choice" blocks, which means lots of scrolling down.

I seem to recall your techie had a 'heat map' which he showed how many people saw this bit and seemed to think it was successful as most visitors saw it and carried on. When infact we are busy scrolling down past it. Fair enough if you have the huge banner come up on your first visit, but everytime is stupid.

I must have taken the wrong pill this morning. A serious topic by the Acting Editor of Accounting Web that has degenerated into a succession of unnecessary expletives presided over by a pig.

You could not make it up.

(How is that for banter then?)

I'm using this thread as my litmus test as to whether I'm coming back to Any Answers ever again.

Please, everyone continue to show me how the average AW thread ends up (seriously, not being sarcastic) so I can decide how to proceed.

A bunch of kids in a classroom can seem quite civilised until the teacher leaves them on their own for a moment. That's AWeb, that is.

Just like in business generally, there is an attempt to keep interaction by a human as limited as possible, because humans are a cost, a big cost and therefore not good for business.

@ CC, I miss the duck.

Don't worry about the rough kids being rude.

You can always just block anyone who annoys you.

I have been "bob free" for some time.

I used to block but it didn't help, not least because you then get unblocked users making comments suggesting blocked users are commenting on you.

Anyway, I'm done, a quick browse of the site has took the last of my desire to be on here, though a lot of the reasons are in this thread (bullying and language mainly).

I have zero doubt I will be back, but not for a while.

Oh yes, dear Tom, I think the contempt button will be a big "hit".
In fact, if a sound effect could be added at the point of clicking, that would add to the drama.
I was thinking something along the lines of a voice message narrated by dear Portia in the style of Dom Littlewood saying "What a doughnut".

Thought I noticed something different although I only pop in every now and then. Agree with the headline and short description for the industry updates and blogs. The home page does have a cleaner feel about it.

I second the motion, Portia to be made moderator. It would be a lot more fun that’s for sure.

In addition to the one hour adjustment period before posts are locked (as I have already suggested in this thread) perhaps the ability to also delete posts in that one hour period would be useful.

This might eliminate the multiple posts that we often see which seem to be caused by the delay that happens when the submit button is pressed and nothing happens for a long time. People think their post has not registered and so submit again. With a limited period available to delete posts, the surplus duplicate posts can be removed.
