I have just taken on a new client. I called his old accountant who mentioned that the client's pub business had ceased, and a transport business started immediately afterwards. The old accountant mentioned that the client should have de-registered from vat because the pub business had closed, and re-registered for the transport business. Is that right? I could understand that if we were dealing with two limited companies, but thought that with a sole trader it is the person who is registered, not the business. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes - it's rubbish.
Though the change in the type of trade should've been notified.
Ask the old accountant to state his reference in the regs and you'll hear nothing more from him.
