Tax Filer closing

Didn't find your answer?

Hi all,

Just been given 14 days to sort out new accounts & tax software as tax filer is closing, anyone else in same situation and can they advise what they have done?

I presume changing software we need to re populate everything - which will be very time consuming and having a quick review of pricing it everywhere seems alot more expensive than TaxFiler was

Iris Elements any good?

They are offering us accounts and tax for the same price as previously but I see they have 2 tax offerings and one (the most expensive) only allows capital allowances?

its rinse and repeat of what they did to drummohr users in 2016 - crazy thing back then was that the new online replacement they had didnt even work 10 days into new tax year and they couldnt even export basic client info over to new system (eg client first names) - thankfully btc came to the rescue and ported all main client data over and got us up and running in a couple of hours. To switch off in tax year filing season is particulalry taking the p iss.

important question for any new provider is what access do you have to data at the point you leave if you do leave. Do you still at minimum retain access to data you had on read only basis for at least a couple of tax years?

It's nonsense. Just logged into Taxfiler and no sign of any 14 Day deadline.

Iris are nowhere near ready to move the vast majority of users over from Taxfiler to Elements Tax & Accounts yet, and are unlikely to be for months. They're literally moving sole practitioners over, one at a time.

Well, it's certainly not something I'm seeing and I've just checked again now.

How many clients do you have in Taxfiler and what subscription are you paying for?

Wow, 14 days doesn't give you long to archive everything (unless you are switching to Elements....)

2 questions -

1. How did they tell you this?
2. Do you work for IRIS elements?

It's obviously not nonsense and I don't know why you would accuse other professionals of making things up. I've also had the same notice today upon logging into the Taxfiler software - giving me 16 days to 'upgrade'.

"Your Taxfiler subscription will expire soon. It's time to upgrade to IRIS Elements Tax and Accounts, just select Act now.
Find out what this means for you. Check out our frequently asked questions. Read testimonials from customers who have successfully migrated.
16 days remaining"

"As a Taxfiler customer, we’re now telling you that you need to upgrade to IRIS Elements Tax and Accounts to continue working with your data and we’re giving you a minimum of 30 days’ notice."

"Once your Taxfiler subscription expires, you’ll still be able to view your data, but you won’t be able to add any new clients or create and file accounts and tax returns."

I've been away for the last 10 days so it's possible that I may have had the message sooner had I logged in, but I've certainly received no other correspondence (electronic or otherwise) advising me of this. However, this triggers the question - if I had not logged onto the software until next week, would it only be giving me a few days to 'upgrade'. Or, worse, what if you didn't need to log on until next month and the deadline had already passed?

Nothing short of shoddy customer service, almost forcing you to switch to their new product and giving no time to seek out alternatives, but to be expected from Iris. It's only a couple of years ago that they almost trebled our software costs after they took over Taxfiler and our payroll provider, and I am in no doubt that further significant cost increases are on the horizon.

IRIS doing what they do best, bend you over that barrel and laugh in your face.

Its why I refuse to have anything to do with them.

Can they laugh in your face if you're bent over a barrel?

Well depends which way you are bent. Knowing them, back to the barrel for maximum pain.

I am getting the following message from Taxfiler:

Find out about migrating from Taxfiler:
To ensure that your migration completes successfully, do not migrate unless you have received an email invitation.
From June 2022, we stopped selling the current version of Taxfiler to new customers.
We're focusing our attention on IRIS Elements and new technology to bring you a better experience. Therefore, at some point in the future, Taxfiler will no longer be supported, but there are no current timescales for this.

I think you are reading it wrong, though my bet is they are wording it to make it sound like you HAVE to upgrade when in reality you can renew.

They are using typical heavy handed wording to scare you into acting quickly - such as "you won't be able to create, edit or submit accounts and tax returns." but that is just if you don't renew.

Website shows that Taxfiler is closed to NEW customers but states "Existing Taxfiler Customer - If you’re an existing Taxfiler Customer and you’re looking to upgrade or >>renew<< your licence, you can still do so. Please get in touch."

My emphasis on renew.

When you ring they will do everything to get you onto Elements but stick to your guns and renw. Report back!

They bought out Taxfiler about two years ago. They will have no interest whatsoever in keeping it going for 2023/24. They used the code for the majority of Elements.
It's wishful thinking to think you can carry on using Taxfiler for much longer

Are you still sticking to your guns that Taxfiler is about and everything transferred to Iris? Not sure what to do.

Received this email, which isn't anywhere in line with what it says the timeframe is on TaxFiler log in

1. Your current Taxfiler subscription ends in 30 days and cannot be renewed.
2. At the end of your Taxfiler subscription you will not be able to edit records or file returns, historical data will still be available for up to a year.
3. Everything you need is documented in the information hub (link above) - from here you will need to create a new Elements account and we will send you an activation email.
4. From the activation email you can experiment with dummy data in the new Elements environment but please note that you must delete any experimental data you have added prior to moving.
5. During or post the trial period (30 days) you must upgrade to Elements Tax & Accounts in order to continue to file and edit data. Rest assured this is at the same cost as your old Taxfiler product.
6. If you choose not to upgrade, you will still have read-only access to your historical data in Taxfiler for 1 year.

Take it as yet another lesson all accountants have to learn, don't do any business with Iris ever and the moment they buy the decent, well priced software package you were using for the last ten years, move it over now to save the pain of having to do it later.

You may also substitute Sage in for Iris
