Tax investigations during lockdown

Did they that stop during lock down? If so over what period?

Didn't find your answer?

Further to the earlier post about tax investigations I had a call from my insurers for Fee Protection, and wondering if HMRC stopped doing them, as it might be useful to know in order to chisel a bit off the premiums if i rennew.  I am in two minds over it.

Good luck with that.

They did give the option to mothball the enquiry but they took action to protect tax revenue if needed. I don't see how this affects premiums in any way. It's not like they can't open an enquiry now (in most circumstances anyway).

By mothball, you mean an open investigation was paused? As opposed to your insurers giving you a couple of months off the premium?

As in HMRC paused the enquiry.

There's an argument that, because of the temporary pause in activity, investigations might be more likely in the coming year, so your premium should be higher.

Only had one ongoing one that they put a temporary hold on 'until we start this work again' with no timescales mentioned. Said a delay wasn't necessary and was subsequently closed pretty promptly.

I can only speak from previous experience now, but both an IT and a VAT enquiry were paused, and the Inspectors were more that happy to be reasonable during both if I chose to continue.

Of course, both ex-clients now owing to my move, and one still not settled (client's problem for failing to engage), so dunno what, and doubt I ever will know, what happens next.

They seem to have left it to the discretion of the tax agents. I'm managing a few ongoing investigations and in each case I corresponded directly with the HMRC inspectors to agree how we would proceed on a case by case basis.
