Tax on "bursary"

Tax on "bursary"

Didn't find your answer?

Hi all,

I have a doctor colleague who is training to be a GP. He has asked my advice about the tax status of a single additional payment he is receiving in the near future.

Health Education England, who organise his ongoing medical education, have offered a £20000 bursary for him to join a training program in a poorly subscribed area. He is employed as a GP registrar and receives a salary from his local employer (a GP surgery).

He is unsure whether this payment is a true educational bursary (considering HEE is paying it and his training status) or would be classed as a "golden hello" and therefore subject to tax and NI (although the payment is not from his employer, the GP surgery)?

I've looked at the HMRC guidance and I'm sure it could be classified either way. Any advice?
