Tax refund for 2020

I have a client who is waiting to claim tax refund for the current year

Didn't find your answer?

I have a client who is waiting for 5th April to submit tax self-assessment.  He has overpaid tax from PAYE but less income in his self-employment that may result in a small tax refund. In the current climate the refund will help him with cashflow.

Will HMRC process tax refunds as usual or will be on hold?

Any suggestions will be helpful.

Thank you,

Don't know what happened to the first reply after I tried to edit it?

So...your guess is as good as mine.

If the return is submitted electronically, and includes a claim and bank details it could easily be in his bank within a few days of submission & processiong.

Then again it might end up on an HMRC Worklist for manual intervention that would hold matters up. Or it could disappear into a security checking blackhole for a couple of months.

Thank you, Paul.

The same thought I have too. With the current situation, tax refunds may be at the back fo the worklist.

Thank you again for your reply.

Why would you submit a claim now for someone who is self employed. How on earth could HMRC process a 2019/20 claim now for a self employed individual that has not ceased. In addition it would never get processed quicker manually now rather than waiting to post 05/04/2020. This seems like it's not for a client but for you. Any accountant or experienced SA individual would know the answer to your questions.

Don't think the op was suggesting a claim now (in March), rather what might happen when the 2019/20 return was submitted shortly after 5 April 2020.

I suspect no change to existing process as HMRC will be too busy setting up the new portal for employers to use in respect of furloughed employees and deferring the July 2020 POA to be thinking of changing Self Assessment repayment systems.

Thank you possep,

I think you completely misunderstood my question. I didn't say I/my client wanted to submit 2019/20 claim now.

My question was, will tax refunds be processed as business as usual or delayed by the current situation.

Thank you for trying though.
