Tax software for small numbers

Didn't find your answer?

As an employee I used big firm tax software but I've now moved on.  In future I will be doing basic tax returns for about 10 friends and family - no vicars, underwriters, politicians.  No trust or partnership returns.  Can anyone recommend software for such a small number of "clients"?

Taxfiler at £12 a month, or just use the HMRC online filing through your agent gateway.

And another vote for Taxfiler, though we wait with bated breath the outcome of the takeover by IRIS earlier in the year

Top Up Tax at £5 plus VAT per Return. I have used it now for 4 years for a very small mixed bunch of clients and it's very good.

Another vote for Top Up Tax, cheap and easy to use.

The HMRC Gateway is free for taxpayers and their agents.

I file over 150 tax returns a year (all my firm's) through it. I find it quick and easy. You get instant filing confirmation, a tax calculation and a copy of the Tax Return.

Mostly clients has 1 or 2 P60s, a bit of investment income, rents etc. It doesn't take long to input the details. I keep my summary workings and schedule of info on Excel.

It's works fine me for years. Unless I have complex cases and have to retype the same details each year then I'm more than happy with it.

I do use CCH for Accounts and CT Returns as this is a more complex area and iXBRL etc

Thanks everyone. I'll have a look at Taxfiler and Top-up Tax. I can see the argument for using the HMRC site but I'd prefer to have something which shows where everyone is progress wise at a glance.

this is the failing with HMRC software that you have rightly identified that and the length of time taken to tailor check and file compared with say Taxfiler
