TaxFiler Changes

Discussion on changes in pricing and subscription model

Search AccountingWEB

I have received an email to say that the new monthly charge for TaxFiler will be £20+VAT per month. I was previously paying £10+VAT per month, so this is an 100% hike!

The subcription model also appears to have changed, with the price now dependent on the number of clients you have registered, rather than the number of returns you submit a year. This is frustrating as it will mean that I will need to delete old clients from TaxFiler to try to keep the number of clients I have registered from exceeding the limit.

A 100% hike seems far too much, especially given that the product will affectively remain the same (not that I need any additions!). What are other peoples thoughts? Has anyone else noticed any other changes? Is there any scope for some sort of action as a group eg online petition to register objection?

Chris

It's already well discussed on a dozen threads.

What will you be using instead of Taxfiler ?

Ok, thanks. I take it most people are resigned to the changes then?

VT and Tax Calc do become more attractive now.

Will VT file your tax returns ?

It's not so much about being resigned to the changes as struggling to find a way to claim that Taxfiler is not cheap enough when it's cheaper than just about every other product.

Will you be switching to VT or Taxcalc ?

Not sure I could be bothered to delete every defunct client to delay the fateful day where I need to pay an extra tenner + VAT a month. I think there are downsides to that but, sure, that's a management conversation you need to have with yourself. Maybe think about how much you'll save between now and that date you've got over 30 active clients.

I guess I'm just feeling anger at a big company coming in, buying up a successful small company, and then doubling the price. Presumably TaxFiler was run at a profit before, so effectively Iris have just doubled TaxFiler's revenue, with the increase being 100% profit for them. It does feel like a kick in the balls for a small operator.

Accounts/tax software is effectively just a database and an API with HMRC/CH - albeit it one that needs to bear in mind the accounting standards and the tax legislation. TaxFiler did/does it in a simplistic way, and it does baffle me how complex IRIS/PTP/Digita make it. Presumably there is now an opportunity for a small development team to develop something similar to TaxFiler.

Sure - well, you must do what's right for you.

Easy for me to say I'll stick with Taxfiler. I'm not going to need software of any sort in a few years time so I can't see the point in investing time in learning new systems I don't need to learn. I've enough on, learning new stuff I do need to learn.

As James Reeves pointed out to me, they haven't increased prices since 2012. Which, I believe, is when they started.

Do people actually want a practice management function?

I've managed for over 40 years without practice management software. I could live without it. Having never used it, it's hard to say whether it'd make my life easier. I dunno - Taxfiler already tells me what tax returns I need to complete. Companies House and the VAT men send me reminders. What more do I need ?

Yes me, and it's a major factor in me staying with Taxfiler (although as Lion point's out, TF's new price is still at the very low end of the market)

Been thinking about PM for a while , and had already started looking when TF announced they were adding it.

Surely it should be an add on then for those who want it?
