Taxfiler VAT error message

Taxfiler was unable to download VAT period data from HMRC. The client and/or agent is not authorised

Didn't find your answer?

I am going round in circles with Taxfilers help.

My online HMRC authority expired and having no passport set up a temporary VAT only access and filed my due returns. Last week following AccountingWebb help I used an employee's data to re-complete full access. I can now download (when available) HMRC tax details but have no access to any of my VAT files. The support service seems to be saying I need to register as VAT only, but this misses the point as most of the work I do is on self-assessment, with a few VAT returns here and there.

Do I now need to buy a second piece of software for the VAT returns, or does anyone know how to correct the error? If I was unable to access a sole VAT return, I would accept this would be a HMRC authorisation issue but the fact I can see now of my VAT clients hints at a bigger issue.

Do you have two separate agent accounts, one for SA and one for VAT? If so then you either need separate software for VAT returns and SA returns or you need to sort your agent accounts and get all your authorisations on one account.

edit: the second option is the correct one in this situation.

Thanks; I have set up an agent services account to allow filing of MTD VAT returns. How do I move my self-assessment clients to this reference as they are on my historic agent account set up many moons ago...

Yes we had the same issue and taxfiler support were no help at all, you can only connect one agent account to taxfiler at a time, that is to say so that you can a) view HMRC SA data and b) file VAT returns, so connecting it to the old agent login will not work for VAT so you need to connect the new ASA.

But you will also need to ensure that you have copied all your clients across to the new ASA even though you do not use that new ASA for anything SA related.

The issue previously mentioned about not having a passport etc I logged with an Agent Manager 4 weeks ago who has still had no response from online services

How do I do this I tried imputing my agent code from and was told it would not work. I have phone the online support and they informed that the self-assessment side of the ASA is not yet active.

Have you copied across all your VAT and SA authorisations from your old login? You do that by following the link on the ASA

Whereas some software enables holding more than one ASA account or having a mixture of authorisations. I would be surprised if any software enables using a different authorisation for different taxes for the same tax paying legal entity (this is a different point to my point about scopes below).

Hence you would probably need to create a separate legal entity record. However, I would think it is best to sort out the authorisations rather than go through this route as it would create a lot of hassle in the long term.

In a strict sense the authorities are held by HMRC by scope and the scopes for VAT and Self Assessment are different. Hence if you use a different gateway on the same system and only authorise the limited set of scopes it could work that way. However, that depends a lot on whether your software allows the scopes authorised to vary or just authorises the lot. (some allow the scopes to vary)

That, however, is also like to create confusion in the long term although it would provide a short term workaround.
