I log on through my iPhone (it goes straight to my profile screen) and I've noticed that today I've lost around 40 thanks. I was sure I lost quite a lot a while ago too. Why are they vanishing? Anybody else noticed this?

Could it be something to do with deleted posts?
No idea if this is accurate ,it is just the only reason my brain has to date processed.
Is it possible someone has had their account removed and therefore you've lost all the 'thanks' you were given?
Accounts being removed?

Why would that happen?
I don't know

I don't know. I'm not a moderator. My reasoning was if their account was removed/banned then perhaps all their comments, and therefore likes, would disappear with them.
Let's see what we can do
As we can not thank your question, make a comment on the thread and let's see if we can recover some for you.
One more thanks added to your list, a valued contributor should not lose thanks just because someone has left the site.
Why such concern?
Over number of thanks. I do not even know how many I have.
It would not concern me if all my thanks disappear.
Is it some comptetion on number of thanks?
Thanks but no thanks
I do not need the thanks. I am not concerned about the number of thanks I have. I still have not looked how many I have.
Dare I say it, may be it is best to remove showing the number of thanks. We would know who wsd the top contributor through the annual award.
Some may maintain a manual count.
Value of thanks
I see the value of thanks as two-fold.
Firstly, for the poster themselves, thanks are an indication that their comments are appreciated. Some may not care about that, but I like knowing that someone has taken the, albeit minimal, effort to show they liked my post.
But, to my mind more importantly, they are an indication of whether a member is any good. Like feedback on eBay and the like, a high number of thanks is an indication of a contributor whose posts are valued by the community. That is also an indication that their posts are likely to be reliable. Not 100% certainly, some thanks are given for posts that amuse people but have no technical content, but an indicator nonetheless.
I like the thanks system
I both give, and receive, thanks. It's a sign of appreciation ... and just good manners. I often say 'Thank you' in the real world, too.
eg. If you help someone and they thank you, you are more likely to help them again. If they ignore you (or pour criticism on you) then you are unlikely to help that person again.
Drawback and suggestion
eg. If you help someone and they thank you, you are more likely to help them again. If they ignore you (or pour criticism on you) then you are unlikely to help that person again.
In the real world you know who has thanked you.
I think if the identity of the thanker was made available to the member (but not to the wider membership) it would make for a more harmonious community. It would bring some pleasant surprises because I should imagine many of us have thanked or received a thanks from someone who we have perceived to be 'against' us in the debate.
Agreed
ps. I am one of the people who thanked that comment ;)
pps. So am I :)
(and it's a genuine thanks, unlike the bogus thanks given by duplicate accounts - they know who they are)
Do you mean . . .
I agree that thanks should be transparent.
. . . that the identity of the thankers should be visible to all? I think that might be counter-productive. The warm glow that a member might feel will soon be lost in the cry of 'clique' from the terminally disgruntled.
Agreed again, Andy (and another thanks for you)
I need to be careful. If I keep on agreeing with you then ......
.... you could end up being promoted to gang leader ... or even worse ... win the 'most thanked' award! :)
Ha ha!

Now you are being mischievous. I nearly said something that could get me into BIG trouble!
How would it cut out the gang accusations?
You only have to have like minded views with someone (which some other person may not agree with) and the gang accusations start.
However, I'll go along with the majority vote ... if we get one.
I never thought about them
I never used to give thanks - not by the system anyway - simply because it wasn't something I thought about - it was like the report button.
I never use the reply button either.
I use the quote quite a lot.
I've started to use the thanks button a little when I remember.
I guess now Rachael has gone that's one person fewer in Sift who has any interest in what members think of the site. That leaves how many . . .?
Thanks
I have been a member of AW for some years, I hardly ever ask a question, I hardly ever give advice, but I read many posts and learn a lot. I like the thanks option, sometimes I read a really good answer and I think it is only appropriate that the person that gave the answer gets the thanks, as much as I would say thanks if having a conversation.
