I've been cleaning out some stuff lately, and I came across my mother's old book from 1995. The New Current Year Basis of Assessment by the inland revenue, £7.50 bargain at the time I'd have thought.
So I wondered, is there anyone else who still has this little piece of tax reform history lying around? Wonder if there are any tax museums I could donate it to lol.

Don't be too quick to give it away! It may be worth good money in the near future as basis period reformers, with no record of overlap profits, scuttle to rework figures to have a stab at calculating overlap relief!
Ah! That's brought back memories - being invited to the local tax office to sit in a classroom side by side with the inspectors, whilst we were all taught how this new thing called Self Assessment would work.
Dare I say, that was the epitome of 'Working Together' where it was new to all of us and we were learning the details side by side with HMIT (as was).
I am fondly looking at the two books we were given (yes foc!). These were 'The new current year basis of assessment' and 'Self Assessment: the legal framework' both having the cover price of £3.
Wouldn't it be nice to think that if a similarly seismic change to the tax system was ever contemplated, that HMRC would look back in their own archives, see what worked and roll out a similarly effective roll-out process ........
Hah! Yes Bill, I still have those exact two books. I had forgotten about the learn-with-the-inspectors sessions but I do now recall the sense of camaraderie as we chatted and faced the new fangled system together. Happier times.
