The ‘Opportunities’ door has reopened

We are finally bringing back the small ads service to Any Answers

Didn't find your answer?

This is a little announcement that there is a new Any Answers topic option available to classify your posts under the heading, “Opportunities”.

AccountingWEB members with long memories will recall that the previous incarnation of the site included a page that allowed you to post requests for work, job openings and blocks of fees for sale.

Barely a month goes by without someone mentioning it to the editorial team, so we decided it was time to give in to public demand and find a way to reinstate the feature.

At the moment, the Opportunities page is just like any other stream in Any Answers, but if it develops as we think and hope it will, we will look to upgrade the facility into a more prominent and sustainable part of the AccountingWEB experience.

With such a low-key approach, we opted not to put too many restrictions around what is or isn’t suitable to post, so the usual practice/fees for sale and job-related posts – including recruitment ads posted directly by accountants – are fair game, as are early-stage software initiatives, market research and other non-specific commercial ventures.

However, we will ask for members to abide by some simple rules and reserve the right to remove any posts without explanation that the editors deem to fall outside our remit to provide a useful service to members. So:

  • Please only post your Opportunity once
  • Limit your Opportunity posts to no more than three a month
  • Use the Personal Message function to solicit replies – we do not want Opportunities to become a dumping ground for spammy URL links
  • Mention of live streaming of major sporting events are expressly banned from this page
  • If you see an Opportunty post that is unsuitable, a duplicate or otherwise violates the purpose for which you think the page is intended, please report it and our moderators will deal with it.

We’re interested to hear any feedback or suggestions on how to improve the Opportunities idea, so let us know your thoughts by commenting below.

So this is nothing like the old opportunities page then, it's just a category in any answers?
In which case its a pointless feature, please bring the old feature back, we have only been asking for about 15 years

Yes, it would work better as a separate page, like it was in t'good old days. To include dating and an e-bay style auction platform ..... actually that sounds like a good idea, we can bid for practices, fees, partners' spouses etc.

And website domains. I can do you a great deal on arthur-putey.co.uk

Can we ban the style gurus from the opportunities section?

Hi John,

As ever, I appreciate you listening to users and providing a function that's been asked for, however it's a bit awkward having it appear in with all the any answers questions.

I can only imagine it'll result in a broad swathe of people disinterested in the opportunity being advertised nevertheless replying to the advert as they click through all the new threads. It's not at all obvious when a thread is in the Opportunity category, I certainly never use categories when browsing the site and I imagine most others with a general interest in the content don't either, there's not enough new threads each day that I would ever need to restrict myself to certain categories.

If Opportunities must be a part of Any Answers rather than a separate section, it would help if the opportunity threads at least looked different when you opened them, as I said there's nothing on the page to indicate what you're looking at, other than the content of the post itself (unless I'm blind, but I checked very carefully!) so it's a bit jarring. Even just displaying the category under the post heading would be useful.

Anyway, just my thoughts, glad they're back in some form at least, I expect it'll be useful to some.

I agree. I found the domain name thread through latest posts' and didn't even notice the tag (i never look at them, and even when the opportunities section was referenced in that thread i didn't know it was a serious reference until i saw this thread lower down)

The instant thread is tagged "careers" and "M&A".

Either John is telling us something in a very coded way, or it shows that even he can't be bothered with choosing appropriate taggage.

IMHO there are way too many tags, and those that start with 'A' ("ACCA" and "accounts" are recurrent favourites) get chosen at random for no other reason than that the list is arranged alphabetically. (Oh, a second reason may be that the list opens at the top.)

The advert thread was tagged
Firms
If I was adverising then I just could not be bothered to read the tags. I would give up long before reading Opps and would be certain that was not the right advert description.

@JOHN
Do we report mis-tagging if advertisers cannot follow the tagging rules
Or is that just an Ixbrl issue?

Weird. I'm sure I read "opportunities". The power of suggestion!

John doesn't mean 'tag' (which we do see). He means (and said) 'category' - which we don't see but can use to filter. Not sure if it was me introduced that confusion to the thread. If so, apologies. Let me assist with its farewell.

Never noticed it as I usually just look at latest without even going to the page.
Correct, Filter was 'Opportunities'

Trouble is the page simply says
Filter question by
-Any-

The word CATEGORY only appears once filter is chosen.
Learn something new every day

Perhaps CATEGORY needs to be added as display somewhere near TAGS on the actual posting

My pleasure.

I think that's what Duggimon was suggesting. Or even to show the category on the contents page before you open the thread. (But personally I don't see the point of doing either. Categories are useful, IMO, if you want to filter. If you want to filter, then use the filters! I would say that if you want to filter out, rather than filter for, then the functionality should be changed so you could maybe list more than one category at once in your filter.)

I've never been part of a broad swathe before.

It rather suits me.

I think I'll wear it more often.

If you intend to wind up responders by leaving it in any answers, then have the basics sorted
NOT opportunities
Reality is ADVERTISING
Better would be AAdvertising, being close to the top of tags.

Tags a waste of time.

I never look at categories, although they now could be useful if you could opt out of one or more, I've opportunities.

As it stands they just get dumped in any answers with everything else, so it's just spam. At least the football streaming ones are more entertaining.

I don't think, in this instance, Aweb have listened to regulars, they just are desperate for more traffic, which they allowed to drop off with the re-incarnation years ago and picking on the regulars a while back which resulted in many leaving altogether or now just posting 80% less.

Or, if they did listen to the 3 or so hwo requested they implement this, why have they not listen to the hundreds of posts with other suggestions.
