Those were the days

Those were the days

Didn't find your answer?

So I see the year is ending on an equally depressing note as it began as Greg Lake (of King Crimson and ELP (Emerson Lake and Palmer) died  on 7th December with Keith Emerson having passed on earlier this year. Amazing and entertaining progressive rock band with their music and light shows together with a very vivid lyrical talent.

Extract from Epitaph

Between the iron gates of fate
The seeds of time were sown
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known.
Knowledge is a deadly friend
If no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools.

I have lost count of the musical greats now lost  this year

To live in hearts we leave behind, is not to die

Greg Lake and, his like, we'll not see again. A truly brilliant era.

My favourite from Brain Salad Surgery (I still have the vinyl with the interesting fold out cover) has to be
Karn Evil 9, however maybe more appropriate for the occasion:

Do you wanna be an angel
Do you wanna be a star
Do you wanna play some magic
On my guitar
Do you wanna be a poet
Do you wanna be my string
You could be anything

Do you wanna be the lover of another undercover
You could even be the
Man on the moon

Do you wanna be the player
Do you wanna be the string
Let me tell you something
It just don't mean a thing

You see it really doesn't matter
When you're buried in disguise
By the dark glass on your eyes
Though your flesh has crystallised
Still... You turn me on

Do you wanna be the pillow
Where I lay my head
Do you wanna be the feathers
Lying on my bed
Do you wanna be the cover
Of a magazine
Create a scene

Every day a little sadder
A little madder
Someone get me a ladder

Do you wanna be the singer
Do you wanna be the song
Let me tell you something
You just couldn't be more wrong

You see I really have to tell you
That it all gets so intense
From my experience
It just doesn't seem to make sense
Still... You turn me on

I always liked the lyrics to "Karn Evil No 9"
and not even banned by the Beeb.

Court of the Crimson King and 21st Century Schizoid Man - just brilliant.

Wasn't "Those Were the Days" Cream ? Not Greg Lake, like....

If anyone hasn't seen the footage of CP's drum solo in a performance of Fanfare .., just Google "Carl Palmer drum solo" and turn up the volume.

I have been looking at articles about the new needle-less vinyl record players. No contact with the disc and the ability to ignore scratches.

Unbelievably expensive at the moment but sure to come down. Will they give as good a reproduction as a needle? I don't know but the reports suggest they do.

Now feeling quite pleased that I hung onto all those old fashioned LP's.

@Lion - Cream - who are thankfully still alive and performing individually - never in a million years.
I was just being nostalgic but the song which comes to mind was sung by Mary Hopkins

Mary Hopkin (thankfully in the singular) ? Bless me - whatever next ? Dana?

I believe that's Felix Pappalardi on tubular bells on this track.

I don't believe it !!
Wheels of Fire was the first LP I managed to get of theirs. Selectadisc in Nottingham only had a couple left by the time I saved the money. Only 15 with a Saturday job and I forget one of the songs completely.
Bring on the men in white coats now then before I get worse

Jack Bruce died in 2014.

Ginger Baker and Slowhand are still going though.

Anyway, none of them are a patch on Peters and Lee.

Oh no - must have blinked and he was my favourite too.
Favourite track was To Isengard on Songs for a Tailor, closely followed by Weird of Hermiston

Gutted!!
Just got back from a 2 day trip away during which, spookily, I purchased Court of the Crimson King with an extra DVD which (I think) has the 1969 Hyde Park performance of 21st Century Schizoid Man on it. Not yet had a chance to play it.
Also bought 5CD set of Steve Hackett's old stuff for £9.99 which I have some on vinyl. Ian McDonald played in Steve Hackett's band for a while, as did John Wetton, a later recruit to King Crimson. John Wetton still guests even now.
What struck me most though is that there seems to be a lot of aging prog rock accountants out there having a good old whinge.
Keep up the good work and keep giving HMRC hell - they deserve it!
