Too late for Gift Aid carry back

Taxpayer filed 2018/19 tax return to early

Didn't find your answer?

Good afternoon.

A taxpayer wishes to make a gift aid payment now (i.e. 2019/20 tax year). He realises his tax rates in 2018/19 were higher, and would like the payment treated as 2018/19.

Unfortunately, his 2018/19 tax return was submitted to HMRC ages ago, so the claim cannoty be made before the submission date.

Is there any way around this rule?

Many thanks.

Thanks Penelope. Figured as much. A pity, as tax rates can be a bit of a tipping point as to whether people give in the first place.

As a matter of interest, I have a client I regularly relate back Gift Aid to an earlier year.

Typically, his tax return will be submitted on 30 or 31 January each year in order to take advantage of this rule.

It is a rather daft rule. But "rules is rules"!

Read Aesop's fable of the hare and the tortoise.

Very instructive.

Yes, but the tortoise wouldn't have been fined for crossing the finishing line after 31 Jan. Scylla and Charybdis.
