Transferring MTD VAT client from other accountant

Govy gateway

Didn't find your answer?

I have taken on a new client who is already signed up for MTD vat. I sent the authorosation link as per the guidance for my ASA. The client has two Govt gateways, one for CIS and one for SA. Neither of these worked for them to be able to access and grant the authorisation.

Whats the best/easiest way now for client to authorise me as I am confused abiout how they can now do this?

Sounds to me like your missing a step. Unless they have their own vat link you shouldn't need to do it that way. Sounds more like previous accountants need to de link their connection to enable you to authorise yours.

thanks SX Guy but I don't understand why client has to 'de-link' (never heard of that before) and how does this allow client to authorise me and by which method?

Surely they would need to be registered for online VAT services to do this? CIS and SA are irrelevant.

I just use my old agents account and pick up the info I need from previous returns in the cloud bookkeeping.

Can the client add a tax i.e. 'VAT' or 'MTD for vat' to their current govt gateway account which is only for CIS at the moment, then when clicking on the link i send them from ASA account, they will then be able to authorise?

Or do I just do it old fashioned way, get HMRC to issue authorisation code from old agents account, then copy across once have code?

In old agent account you will need to put the figures from the last VAT return before MTD and they get the code the usual way and are automatically copied into your ASA.

Agree 100% with what Matrix says.
This is the only method that seems to work for me.
Agree also with what OP says about client's Govt Gateway invitation not working.
Whole system is a joke!

Don't think I can do it through old agent account. Company set up in July 2019 and has only been registered for MTD vat from set up and so no records and vat details pre MTD as didn't exist. He was a sole trade before this but I believe under a different vat number.

Try N/A for last VAT return and zero for box 6. Just give it a go.

thanks matrix, I did try this but failed. I think as company has only been MTD, perhaps the old agent account does not even recognise vat number.

Is his CIS Govt Gateway account in the name of the limited company?
If so maybe get him to log in and sign up for Vat?
Then try and use that to authorise you...
