Travel & Accomodation costs - allowable?

Travel & Accomodation costs - allowable?

Didn't find your answer?

This is probably a stupid question and I think I have over thought this.

I have a client who lets his large house out on the weekend to paying guests ( up to 16) .

They have full use of the house so he moves out for the weekend and rents a flat nearby. He wishes to claim the cost of renting the flat as a business expense, although I believe he can't as this is private living expenses.

Am I correct or is he?

I agree with you.

The proceeds he received may be eligible for rent a room relief though.

He can claim the cost as a business expense but whether it's tax deductible is another question.  I'd say not.

That is the issue. There is no doubt he has incurred the expense in the course of running his business, but I'm trying to find an argument where it could be deemed wholly and exclusively for the purposes of  the trade and not a place to rest his head at night.
