Two CIS Subcontractors with the same name!

I cant tell which one is which on the return page

Didn't find your answer?

I have recently employed two separate sub-contractors - both of whom are D. Jones.

They have submitted me differing invoices and so the tax deducted will be different for each one. The trouble is, using HMRC's online CIS return product, there is no way of telling who is who! All there is is a row forĀ "Jones, D" followed by a row for "Jones, D" . Any ideas??

When I looked on line the subcontractor list shows name, UTR , and verification number.
The return shows verification number after the name

If you are trying to file 5 Oct then you are already late
If trying to file 5 Nov you are early

Correct; when I look at my subcontractor list, I can differentiate between them via UTR etc.

When I select which subcontractor to include in this months return, The detail shown is only name and Verification number (they were both verified at the same time so both have the same verification number!)

The detail becomes even less when I click next to enter their pay details, It is literally JUST their name, with the three columns relating to the deductions, etc.... No other way of differentiating between them!!

No - verification numbers are unique.

Not according to

https://www.pattersonhallaccountants.co.uk/cis-subcontractor-verification/

"The verification number which is your proof that you have deducted the correct amount of tax. You will be provided with the same verification number if you verify multiple subcontractors at the same time."

So the problem is verification of 2 d Jones on the same day.
Reverify one of them?

No, you can't see the verification numbers when you're inputting payment details, so this wouldnt help!

Agree with Ste.

Now you have an old issue to sort out first.

Can you edit names? Maybe try using a lower case letter for their initial or last name as an identifier for you. Don't know if that works, don't deal with cis returns.

Can you not reverify one of them which may possibly give you a new verification number? Not sure if the HMRC software allows you to -we can do it on third party software. There should be an option as subbies do change status.

On the page where I enter pay details I don't even see the verification numbers - literally 2 lots of "Jones,D".

Very frustrating....!

Has neither got a middle initial? They are very useful.

Yes, they are D.A. and D.E., which have both been entered into their respective details when adding a sub contractor, and they're shown in the view subcontractor page, but on the enter pay details page HMRC in their wisdom dont show it!
