Using business van for private mileage

Mr Bloggs regularly uses his van in the evenings and weekends for private use

Didn't find your answer?

I would like to suggest a few apps for recording either business or private mileage.

What would you recommend for someone who's not particularly brilliant at tech stuff?

Pen or pencil and notebook in the cab!

The problem I find with any app is that they don't always work/ crash/ close.......! Not a problem for the ultea-organised but perfectly possible for some to carry on blindly for a month or so not realising it's not recording (I personally missed over a month of mileage through this so, a good job I kept a manual record so I could update it)!

That said, I and many clients, use MileIQ. Pretty simple to categorise... swipe left for business, right for personal (or v/v I can never remember). Reports can be exported.

There are, however, many options out there. QBO's mileage tool - which a couple of clients tried - caused more problems than solutions!!!

"swipe left for business, right for personal (or v/v I can never remember)" ... rather neatly sums up the weakness of relying on Apps with their supposedly 'intuitive' graphical interface.

Probably as well that I (and presumably you) have never tried Tinder!

Strange you mention that. "No!" I have never tried Tinder. But when I explained the app to a client - rather naively knowingly little about Tinder functionality/ etiquette - they responded with 'similar to Tinder then?'. Perhaps says more about the client(s) who find it easy, than the actual simplicity of the app itself!

Does Mr Bloggs run a company or is he a sole trader ? And how many miles a year, in total ?

He's a sole trader. I don't know how many miles a year in total

I advise clients to photograph the milometer every year end and every buy and sell.
With a date on the photo

You can get mileage at MOT checks from the Government website. That will give some information if he’s had the vehicle for a number of years (and has kept up his MOTs).

I bet he forgets to record this stuff within four months.

Thanks All for your answers.
Mr Bloggs is not the most fastidious at record keeping.
I will suggest MileIQ but don't have high hopes of him actually using it.
At least I can suggest it to other people who will want to do the right thing.

I might have been over generous with my four months. Maybe ten minutes would be closer, allowing him time to get from Moonbeam's office to his van.

Use the Google/apple maps on their phone to track where they have gon then they can mark up what is personal at the end of each month ? Not ideal but if they always have their phone with them it's a good way of nudging the memory

Googlemaps tells me I drove to Newcastle on Tyne last month but the reality is I drove to Ossett and got on a bus.

I took on some clients from a local firm who used to ask their sole traders to keep a mileage log for a month once a year - and use that data to arrive at a 'typical' business/pte split to use for the whole year.

Not ideal, and not something ive done myself, but TBH it's probably better than asking them to estimate their bus/pte split, which always seems to come in at 95% business. As such it might be an option for Mr Bloggs
