UTR needed for agent codes

Which UTR do I put in the letter asking for agent codes

Didn't find your answer?

Hi

I am setting up as self employed and need to request agent codes for self assessment and corporation tax.  I sent a recorded letter on 10th December but have heard nothing back - not sure if no news means a rejection or a delay due to Christmas....

The only reason for my rejection I can see is I have put the wrong UTR number in.  I used my personal UTR that is used for my own online tax return.  I understand I need to set up a separate agent services account with HMRC but I haven't done this as I thought I needed the codes first.  Have I done things the wrong way round? Is there another UTR you get when you set up an online agent services account and is this what I should have used.

I find it ridiculous that there is no phone number to call to find out what is happening to my application!

Nope!
You are experiencing the first hurdle of HMRC inefficiency in dealing with agents. Expect many more and it to become a bane of your life.

Thank you for your replies - not reassuring that they are useless but reassuring that the delay is not due to rejection! I have just read on this site that I can file client's tax return through 3rd party software without being an agent - is this true and do you recommend a particular company?

You have to be an agent, with agent log in details, but not necessarily registered as the particular taxpayer's agent.
