VAT Certificate for MTD Clients

Didn't find your answer?

Search AccountingWEB

Morning all.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere on the forum, so forgive me if I am unecessarily repeating information. I have stumbled upon a way to access clients VAT certificates after they hae been signed up to MTD.

Log into the old governement gateway, select the relevant VAT client and view the submitted returns. At the top of the page there should be an option to view the clients VAT returns since signing them up for MTD. This link will take you to the new ASA page where you should sign in with your ASA log in details.

It will then ask for the VAT number of you client and ,when you continue, for you to confirm the correct client is displayed. Following this (finally) it will give you options of changing the VAT registration details or viewing the VAT certificate.

A somewhat complicated process, but may be useful to some of you.

Good find!
Like the 'HMRC portal rant' thread this shows that the information is in there and available just HMRC hasn't given the proper links to view it.

That is helpful if needlessly complicated

However, as you said the link on the old gateway says it is to allow you view MTD filed returns. It clearly isn't doing that as it isn't even offering it as an option.

Anyone know how I can view returns submitted under MTD within HMRC? We have the confirmation of submission in the software, but I'd still feel better with a confirmation HMRC's end.

Only way I've found so far is via client's log in.

The confirmation in the software is from HMRC's end, it should only show up if the software has received it from HMRC.

What I mean is, your software isn't just confirming it's sent, it's confirming HMRC have received and acknowledged it.

My concern is over the word "should" here.

I am just recalling the farcical issue where test submissions for SA returns generated real responses. Who is to say there isn't an MTD equivalent where HMRC will say the response was triggered incorrectly. As such I would far prefer being able to confirm independently on the HMRC website.

It's ridiculous this isn't just available the same as it was before though. Another thing to add to the long list of "improvements" that have only made things worse.

It is ridiculous. Especially as there is a link purporting to to do just that on the old gateway log in.

HMRC are well and truly losing the plot lately. We called last week to ask the CT department to stop chasing a client when they have a pending CIS reallocation in progress - we got 3 different responses from 3 different calls.

My "should" was more in reference to me not knowing what software you're using but I agree with your sentiments, the whole thing is a stupid waste of time, though thankfully it's at least proven to be less time consuming than we first feared.
