VAT charged from Thailand to the UK?

I have received an invoice for a company in Thailand, which includes a charge of VAT @ 7% (which when I have looked online, is their rate of VAT). The invoice is for hire of goods for an event in Thailand.

However, I am struggling to find any information online as to whether they should be charging us VAT to a UK customer, and, if they should be, whether we can claim this amount back?

Any help is appreciated!

1. You would need a Thai tax expert to be sure.
2. If it's anything like the EU place of supply rules, I'm not surprised they are charging local VAT (like local hotels, restaurants etc will charge you VAT)
3. If it has been correctly charged, then no you can't recover it directly
