VAT Covid tests

Didn't find your answer?

My client just got a contract to supply Covid tests to clinics and individuals. End customers have the option of collecting blood samples themselves or the company does it through its nurses. I understand that the foreign manufacturer's import is zero-rated due to the temporary relief announced earlier this year, but I'm not sure about the production tax treatment. Any ideas are welcome.

Dearest Anonymous, you are busy this year with your questions arent you!

You will surely have noticed that there were a few posts recently whereby the best and most knowledgeable posters on Aweb have said they will no longer answer anonymous posts.

Im trying to be kind today by giving you the heads up early enough in the day, it being a Sunday and most of them hoping for a lie-in, so that you have time to rectify matters and look suitably contrite. That way you might get some really good precise technical help, which is clearly a must for this Q.

It would help though if you actually put down you thoughts on here and reasonings, even if you end up having a debate with yourself, shows then that you are not just being lazy to get an answer from folk, but that you have put as much effort in as they will with their answers.

Alternatively if, as appears, you are floundering you could pay for that technical help by employing a VAT specialist.

Production tax?

This is a complex area with, I suspect, more than one answer, because your client is offering both self-administered and nurse administered tests.

As your client is likely to be making several million profit in the next few months, they can and should seek specialist advice. Wouldn't want to get the VAT treatment of a multi-million contract wrong, which they will if their advice is from a forum - the answers to the VAT treatment will depend entirely on the contractual nature of what is being done and a forum isn't the best format for that.
