VAT DD allocation issue, taking money twice

A year after appearing to have sorted out MTD DD issues, they're taking payment for paid returns

Didn't find your answer?

This morning I got an unexpected VAT direct debit email notification, that I normally expect to on around the 9th of the month, just before the money is taken.

Upon logging into my HMRC MTD account, it appears that they're planning on taking the money for two returns from over a year ago. The exact same amount for the same two returns was taken in a direct debit just over a year ago (the relevant message in on the MTD site states the same amounts and the same returns).

The reason it was for two monthly filed returns was that there had been an issue when I moved to MTD and the final non-MTD direct debit wasn't taken, but last November (after countless phone calls and web chats) the payments seemed to get sorted out, the returns were marked as paid on the VAT MTD site, the correct total amount had been paid to HMRC, and everything started working normally. But now it seems they want payment for them again, even though they already have the money for them.

I'm going to try and call HMRC in the morning, but was wondering if anyone else was in this situation or knew why this would suddenly have happened a year-on?

Because HMRC are a law unto themselves.
