VAT Deferral - cancelling direct debits

Didn't find your answer?

I have a client with a Feb q/e VAT return which was submitted prior to the announcement of the VAT deferral. The client wishes to defer the VAT payment and has cancelled their direct debit as advised. They are concerned that as the return has already been submitted, the VAT payment will still come out.

I have read HMRC guidance:

Customers who normally pay by direct debit should cancel their direct debit with their bank if they are unable to pay. Please do so in sufficient time so that HMRC do not attempt to automatically collect on receipt of your VAT return.

Can anyone tell me what "sufficient time" is? The direct debit was cancelled 26/03/2020 for a payment due 10/04/2020. Is this sufficient?

15 days is more then enough. call the bank to ensure it has been cancelled.

The payment date would have been 14 April

Thank you! In all this chaos, I completely forgot about Easter. Not that bank holidays mean much right now!
