VAT Digital Platforms

VAT Digital Platforms

Didn't find your answer?

Hello all

Just want to get other peoples opinions on this, I think I know the answer but just want to hear other peoples thoughts as I have seen confilicting answers from professionals.

A certain adult content selling platform announced at the start of the week they would be adding vat onto all of their creators subscriptions, tips etc and they will be paying that VAT over to HMRC.

If a content-creator then earns over the VAT threshold from the website, do they have to then submit a VAT return on those earnings and again pay VAT?

I think not as the government guidance below states that it is the platforms responsibility to account for and pay across VAT, so both had to pay VAT then VAT would be paid over twice which doesn't seem right.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-vat-rules-if-you-supply-digital-services-to-private-consumers#digital-portal

I have also researched into Paetron, who follow the same business model and they pay it all across and don't require the creator to do anything.

Thanks in advance!

If you think you know the answer, why not share?

Sorry, edited my post. I was quite confident in my answer until I seen different accountants saying different things on social media!
