VAT Error

September VAT Return Error

Didn't find your answer?

A client has submitted their September quarter VAT return today and then noticed that there is an error.  Is there any way to retract VAT return as it is before the filing deadline?  My understanding is that there isn't and that client will have to correct error on form VAT652 (the error is over £10,000 and over 1% of box 6).

Without wishing to undermine the consensus I believe it is also possible to write a letter, but I would go for 652 myself.

Self Assessment MTD on the other hand has the options to do amended submissions.

That is no change from the pre MTD situation with VAT and self assessment.

I don't disagree with you, but I thought people would like to know. Although I am not an accountant I have been self employed and VAT registered since 1983.

I think there is, however, an argument that people should be able to submit an amended VAT return under MTD at least before filing date.

I'm not so sure about his. The VAT return contains a declaration that it is correct. If you are not sure don't submit.

And if you are submitting a repayment claim and get it in early, do you want HMRC to wait to the last possible date before processing it, in case you change your mind?

People can be both sure and wrong.

And the 652 process is there for them...

I have in the past been advised by HMRC to pay the additional VAT due prior to the normal collection date as it helps demonstrate, with respect to mitigating potential penalties, that it's a genuine error and not an attempt to gain a cash flow advantage.
