VAT ideas please

Not come across this before

Didn't find your answer?

After the lockdown in March the client's business was on the rocks so we de-registered for VAT. Just before Christmas he picked up a large contract out of the blue, which necessitated re-registering.Although we have the new VAT certificate and number it still shows the old number on the HMRC website and the fact we de-registered but states that VAT returns are now due in 2021

What do we have to change the VAT number on the site or don't we have to bother ???

If you have the email and proof of De-Registation, could you not treat that as closed and then set up a new online account at HMRC with the new VAT Reg Number? I also assume that you filed the last VAT100 upon de-reg. It may be that their systems haven't totally updated.

That's what baffling me. The client's VAT registration details on the HMRC site
shows - de-registered March 2020 and all returns were submitted correctly but lower down says that returns are due Jan 2021 and quarterly thereafter as though the original registration is still live

That sounds weird to me and could be a gremlin. It may be that you will have to bite the bullet and call the Agents Help Desk. Have you tried to set up a new Online Account with the new VAT Reg?

When you say HMRC site do you mean the agent one? Sorry if its a silly question but have you obtained online agent authorisation for the new VAT number?

But you would need to get authorised for the new VAT number, online authorisation is based on the VAT number isn't it?

I thought it was based on the client
I had this client before he was originally VAT registered and then was authorised for VAT when he registered
On second thoughts you could be right
But can I have 2 registration for him or will I loose the information about the first???

You could download anything you haven't already from the deregistered number just in case, then try getting authorisation for the new number.

Just ignore it. HMRC's rubbish systems.
Just checked one of mine which ceased March 2018. Shows "VAT registration status:De-Registered". Also shows "VAT return period end date :31 Mar 2021".

1, make sure you have the relevant correspondence substantiating that you deregistered correctly.
2, keep this Q&A thread to confirm the issue about the old VAT number.
