Vat inspection

Didn't find your answer?

We had a remote vat inspection and I duly sent away the information required via dropbox, it has now been 3 weeks and I haven't heard anything should I make contact or just wait for them to come back to me.

Is it a compliance check holding up a refund? If so, definitely follow up.

Otherwise I'd just await their letter. Presumably they've not picked up on any issues that you're aware of?

I've experienced this, HMRC tend to assign cases to Officers and if that Officer goes on holiday or off sick, then nothing gets done, the job isn't assigned to another Officer (like they used to) and they don't tell you either. Basically, they've got around 30 working days to reply to you and that's their idea of customer service.

If it were me, I'd send a polite "just checking you have everything you need, if there is anything else you require please let me know" email and that might get your case moved up their inbox, or not.

The delay is unlikely to be them digging deeper into your file, and more likely they've a pile of work because of limited staff resources and they'll grind through the pile eventually.

One of my clients had a VAT inspection on 19th February 2020.

Everything agreed that day.

Case finally closed off with a letter just over a year later. No contact or debate in between.
