I've experienced HMRC cancelling the direct debit instruction and not telling anyone they've done so...

I've just been on the phone to them and the advisor confirmed everything was set up on time etc etc and how it should have come out. So my client has to pay manually, if they get a penalty (which advisor says won't happen, but I'm not convinced), I've to contact them to get it cancelled (spend more unbillable time in a phone queue). And no doubt I look incompetent to my client. Whatever.

Just for info, one that has gone very smoothly for me, client received an e-mail on 8 August:-

HMRC wrote:
HM Revenue & Customs
VAT Return Direct Debit: reminder of payment collection
Dear (Company name) Ltd

You have a Direct Debit set up to pay your VAT Return. This is a reminder we will collect payment shortly.

We have sent a secure message to your business tax account inbox with full details.

From HMRC Direct Debit Team

D/d went out fine on 12 August, slightly different wording on bank statement "HMRC E VAT" whereas it used to say "HMRC VAT".

And secure message referred to above says:-

HMRC wrote:
VAT Return Direct Debit: Advance notice of your payment
Dear (Company Name) LTD

Direct Debit mandate reference 000123456789

This notice is for information purposes only. We will collect £150,000.00 on or just after 12 August 2019.

Charge type Period Amount
VAT Return Charge June 2019 £150,000.00
Make sure you have enough funds in your account to meet this payment.

Payments will appear on your bank statement as ‘HMRC E VAT’.

If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit we will let you know at least 2 working days in advance of your account being debited.

If you have any questions, call 03002003700 and quote your Direct Debit reference.

From HMRC Direct Debit Team

So there are a couple of places that may give you some confidence that all has gone through in the future.

Yes, its because HMRC were late in migrating older client DD details from a legacy system. They told me this would lead to a delay of a couple of days. But the problem with MTD is that you no longer get confirmation when you file the return that the VAT will be collected by DD, so if the client has not received an email the only way of checking is to call the VAT online services helpdesk!
