VAT MTD

Trying to get agent authorisation for VAT

Didn't find your answer?

I need to get agent authorisation for a few clients before switching them to MTD, but so far tried for 3 clients, in both the old account and ASA account and all 3 have failed. I re-done them multiple times and triple checked all the info (using the March 2022 Box 5 figure) , but still the computer says No. Anybody else having the same problem ? Is it going to have to go back to the paper 64-8s and hope they open the post within 3 months?

In the old agent area the details will be the last vat return prior to mtd - if no vat return submited pre mtd info may be nil n/a if you are lucky.

Worst case get the client on the phone and hand hold them through signing up for a GG account then get them to authorise you once set up

Have you tried putting in the postcode with no gap? I had this issue and it seemed to resolve it.

Nice username btw, what a player!

I am having the same problem - checked all information back to VAT certificate and last VAT return. Can only assume HMRC have not processed through the Jan-Mar return, so going to try Oct-Dec return figures instead, when client has provided them.
I will let you know if these work . . .
Also tried under MTD agent login, and under old agent login
Removing space from postcode doesn't work - system won't allow this

I've spent a lot of the afternoon on the phone to HMRC. It would appear when they started transferring over 'files to MTD system' which I presume is when we started to have to go through that weird double log in thing to the ASA, that deleted the information on the old system. Therefore the figures from the 'last VAT return' could be any of the last few quarters and won't be the last VAT return. And instead of it telling you what is wrong it just says 'failed'. Which is of no use whatsoever. At least that's what he thinks might be going wrong. So a big fail by HMRC in the very first step!

So the best way to do it is to get into your ASA. If have book-marked the HMRC log-in, well guess what, that doesnt work either. Another massive fail Jim. You can only tell if you are in the wrong place if the text is green. It needs to be blue. And the only way to get to the right place is is go to www.gov.uk and search for 'agent services account' and log in from there and then go down to ask a client to authorise you, and then copy and paste a link which you then send to your client and then they can log in and themselves and authorise you.

Thats the stage I'm up to, will be 'interesting' to see what more hoops I have to get through before I can sign them up for MTD.

I dread to think what a mess they will make of it for IT in 2024. It's going to be utter shambles!

Thanks - that might be an option. I spoke to VAT Online Services yesterday (after a 45 minute wait) only to be told to ring Online Services Helpdesk. They then told me that only the VAT Online Services could help, so I rang them back. Another 40 minutes later, I was advised to get the client to phone VAT Online Services and ask for the details that HMRC hold which will apparently then work on the authorisation entry page.

Good news is, they answered the phone quite quickly both times I called. Bad news is they couldnt tell me what information was wrong or what it should be, he only assumed that it was MTD that had mucked up the information (as rmillaaree said in the first reply above). If you want to use that old authorisation, maybe try back-dating the previous Box 5 figures if you have that info. He was also quite scathing about the whole ASA log in situation and system design. He was the first person in about 5 calls that was aware of what the problems are and how to side-step your way in.

My client spoke to VAT online services, to obtain the "correct" data to enter into the authorisation screen, and lo and behold, I have been using the correct data all along. Tried it again - still failed!!
Apparently my client was told that if it still doesn't work, they will refer it to the IT department. All this bl**dy effort to get the client signed up for MTD which will benefit absolutely nobody!!

The latest is that I have tried to sign up for MTD as the client (with them present), and of course the system asks for the same details, the ones that my client was given by HMRC yesterday (postcode, date of reg, last VAT return box 5 amount etc).
Apparently "the information provided does not match our records"!!
So it looks like HMRC will not be getting a VAT return from my client this quarter, or indeed ever again!
