What a frustrating phone call. March 17 and June 17 returns sent in late after company ceased trading but a payment of approx £140 fot both returns sent in mid-June.
Surcharge £30 issued for June return whch had a liability of £9.
Helpline says June not paid and surcharge only £20 but couldn't possibly tell me how they allocated the £140 received. If I write to the Written enquiries team they might be able to give me a ledger breakdown.
Not worth the time costs but what should have happened?

HMRC allocate to the oldest Return first, unless you specify otherwise.
I am unsure why an early payment for the P06/17 Return could result in a Surcharge! Was there a shortfall? If not, then a short email or letter to HMRC should sort it.
