VAT number Transfer

Advice please

Didn't find your answer?

I need to transfer a VAT number from a sole trader to a partnership. HMRC have advised me on the telephone to fill out the VAT 484 form, but the form doesn't look like it has enough detail. Online it says to complete a VAT1 and a VAT68.

What forms do i actually need to complete?

Thank you in advance.

HMRC know nothing about their business.

Another example of their shocking service.

Not only will you need VAT 1 and VAT68, you'll also need VAT 2.

I didn't think their advice was correct. Thank you Lionofludesch

My advice would be don't transfer it all all, but get a new number. HMRC often mess up transfers, and keeping the number complicates the cut off between the old and new entities. If you make a transfer application, HMRC will often reject it on some technicality, so it just wastes time compared with getting a new number.

Oh right. I'm getting differing advice now. If i was to do this i'm guessing i'd need to deregister the ST as well?

What is the correct procedure then? Transfer or change?

Neither one nor the other is the 'correct' procedure. You have a choice between either transferring the number or deregistering the sole trader and registering the partnership. I'm simply saying that the latter course tends to be simpler. At first glance the former course might appear simpler, but that is not the case in practice.

A lot depends on whether the client wants to keep the number.

They might want to draw a line under the past, they may not be bothered.

There's no right answer.
