VAT on book sales and VAT threshold

Are books sales classed as turnover for VAT threshold

Didn't find your answer?

I have a client that is approaching the VAT sales threshold.  Part of their sales income relates to books publishing.  They arrange for the books to be produced and then sell them on.  Some of the sales are to the US.

My question is will the book sales count towards the VAT threshold or are they exempt?  Does the fact that some of the sales are to the US affect this?

Many thanks

Book sales aren't exempt. If they were, that income wouldn't count.

They're zero rated and the income does count towards deciding whether you need to register.

Exports are zero rated too.

Good point - only proper books are zero rated. Bits of paper with pages that turn.

But e-books still aren't exempt and count towards turnover.
