VAT ON RESIDENTIAL RENT

Vat on residential rent when whole building has option to tax.

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

My understandin is that there is no VAT applicable to residential rents, even if the whole building has been opted in to tax.

Just spoke to HMRC vat helpline and they have refered me to 742A, and are insistent that even residendial rents need to have VAT applied to it.

thanks for your help.

Since you have been referred to it, have you read VAT Notice 742A?

I did read the said notice and it just confirmed my understanding. But we all need a bit of reassurance.

HMRC are wrong!
The building is opted, but the option is ineffective to the extent that it is put to residential use.

Thank you.
I phoned twice and spoke to two different agents and they gave me the same answer.
Thanks for confirming.
