VAT Return not showing on HMRC account

I have submitted a vat return through QuickBooks and received an Internal Server error.

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

I submitted a vat return through QuickBooks and received a internal server error from HMRC. After, I tried to resubmit it and received a Duplicate Submission from HMRC. I called the helpline and been told that the return shows on their system but it's not processed yet. The odd thing is that the return does not show on the HMRC VAT account of the company.

Later, I called the QuickBooks helpline and they told me that the return shows as submitted but not filed. They told me to call HMRC again.

The second time I got through to HMRC they told me they will fill some form and send it, and the outcome will be either to resubmit the return or they will accept the one already submitted.

The issue is that at the moment on the QuickBooks account it shows that the return was not filed with HMRC, so I am unable to submit future returns if the issue is not solved. I have not received any reference number for the return, usually I receive it instantly and it shows on the company vat account instantly.

Did anybody experience this issue before? Thank you.

you may have to update the client authorisation. also you need to unmark it as filed before you try again

Thanks for the reply.

I did that twice (authorisation, unfile) but still the same. QuickBooks said it’s not their issue so waiting for HMRC now.

Had exactly the same via Sage. Stated Duplicate Return and received no Ref when submitted to MTD. Called Revenue today and they have return (was surprised at that).

Seemingly they have it but it wont show online until it is processed. Probably tonight or tomorrow.

This has never happened before as it always appears immediately. Fingers Crossed.

Hi,

That’s what they told me in the first call. Then, I called QuickBooks again and they said to call HMRC again and tell them that the return shows as submitted but not filed.

I called HMRC the second time and they told me something different than in the first call. The advisor had to complete a form and send it to some department. Then he told me it takes up to 30 days for a response from that department.

"I called HMRC the second time and they told me something different than in the first call" ... which unfortunately is the experience of the majority who are 'lucky' enough to get through to HMRC twice!

Doesn't help you (or indeed HMRC who can then count the doubling/trebling in calls received as some sort of evidence that they're 'providing a service').
Fortunately you don't get to see this too often if your interfaces with them are both automated and working - but once the grit gets in the cogs, it becomes obvious that there are few trained monkeys left to maintain them.

Yes it appears not only us, but seems like hundreds more are all experiencing this, so no doubt they will be aware off.

I called earlier and they had received it. Prob glitch which will update the records later or overnight/

Did your account update? I cannot see anything different on our side, still says no VAT returns submitted.

It is probably going in time order. Mine was submitted on the 1st just after midnight.

I submitted after midnight on the 1st, still not showing. Maybe it’s random. I’m curious of the difference in timeline for different account.

So, what was the error exactly? I’ll try and call them again and go through the steps you went through.

I am absolutely astonished. I called and the guy went through it and said oh yes i see the issue its a date fault on there end. he said once i change the date to 1st april, the system will refresh and sort. He was so correct. i got completely logged out had to verify by text again and yes the submit was there for march period and said processing.

i confused... how they sorted mine

I had the exact same issue. Submitted the return just after midnight on the 1st & still not showing on the online account.

Phoned HMRC on 2nd & was given a reference number as was advised it has been returned, not processed yet though. However he did say that the return date was showing as the 31st - I suspect the clocks changing has caused the issue.

If it still isn’t showing on the online account tomorrow then I’ll be phoning to see whether they can change it, because it was submitted on 01/04 not 31/03 & this appears to be causing the issue.

Sounds to me like this a problem of HMRC software clocks not being in line with the rest of the UK clocks.
Maybe the person that changes their clocks was missing.
He only needs to do the thing twice a year, but given that the calendar moved as well, maybe he was 24 hours late.

We see the "Duplicate Submission" now and again for our users. Its frustrating that our hands are tied in helping them resolve it and they have to face the torture of calling HMRC.

Checked the account this morning & is showing now. However showing as being received today, so bit annoying for anyone waiting on a repayment as would be delayed a few days.
