Victor Meldrew morning

Victor Meldrew morning

Didn't find your answer?

I sometimes wonder if HMRC IT workers have ever lived in the real world. They seem incapable of imagining anything beyond their own little bubble. Two examples recently :

I added a new client to my PAYE Agents service. All went fine, they appeared on my client list on HMRC Online. However when I came to use the HMRC PAYE Desktop Viewer the client didn't show. After asking on here I learnt, oh silly me, I have to login to the Government Gateway and follow some ridiculous procedure to assign the client to me. WTF, isn't that what I had done originally !

Whilst on the Govt Gateway I noticed I could add an agent service for auto-enrolment. That may be useful thinks I, not appreciating the black hole of imcompetance I am staring in to. So I fill out the form and wait for the email containing my 10-digit agent reference number with which I can add the service to my HMRC Online menu. Within 5 minutes there it is ! Wow, that worked. So off I trot to add the service. Please enter your postcode ..... which I do.... as entered in the application process .... where it asked which country I am in ... that'll be France .... if you remember that was accepted .... in Johnny Foreigner format... you've guessed already I bet.

When I enter the postcode to confirm adding the service to my account it says INVALID FORMAT !!!! Idiots, complete mind-numbingly thick idiots. I've just entered my postcode and you accepted it. Did you not test this ? I tried entering a random UK postcode to see if I could trick it but no, I now have to phone a help desk next week. I think I may just bin the whole thing because we all know auto-enrolment for micro employers will be a disaster anyway so I think I'll just pass on that.

...and breathe.

How?

This is the second time I have seen a posting about needing to add a client onto the PAYE desktop viewer. Please can someone tell me how to do this?  I have had a look all over the PAYE section of my client on Govt Gateway and can't see what it is we need to do?

Log in to your Govt Gateway account. Select Manage Clients from the left menu then a list of all your available clients appears. Most will already be assigned to your firm but some will not. You can then assign these if you wish.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks but....

I still can't see it.  At which stage does the "manage clients" option come up?  Do I need to be in PAYE or is it before then?

taxhound - enter government gateway. On left hand side there is a list of services available one of which is manage clients - click on that link & the rest should be straightforward.

Nope, still can't see it....

I have

Your HMRC Services

View Communications

Register for Taxes

Services You can Use

Services You can Add

Your Account

Authorise Client

Tools and Calculators

No "manage clients".  And it is not a link within any of the above either as far as I can see.

:(

there should be smaller headings to the left of the "your HMRC services" list.

it's below

It's below Your Services. Manage Clients, the next 'major' option or if you have opened the sub-menu of Your Account it is immediately below Manage Logins.

Found it

Taxhound, you don't log onto HMRC

Goto https://authenticate.gateway.gov.uk/sidp/Authenticate.aspx

and use your usual HMRC User ID and password

Maybe I will regret this question...

But why would they have a system where you get through to two different pages depending on which way you log in, when you are using the same log in info each time?

No, don't answer, my head hurts already...

if anyone is interested ...

I have had a reply from the Pensions Regulator Automatic Enrolment 'support'. It has taken a month for them to reply to say it is not possible for their site to create an account for an agent with a non-standard format postcode.

So whatever assistance it may have been for me to have an agents account with the Pensions Regulator in the run up to automatic enrolement is denied my clients because their IT systems design was incompetant. No other options offered, just tough luck.

I should be surprised but somehow I'm not.

The need to assign seems to happen

where you have more than one Admin, or Assistant registered on the Govt Gateway so that you need to tell the system who should have access. A complete PITA as it is not possible to bulk (re)assugn clainet to reflect changes.
