Virtual Desktops or Cloud Hosting Providers

Looking for a reliable and reasonable Cloud Desktop/Virtual Desktop provider for my practice

Didn't find your answer?

Search AccountingWEB

We are looking to move our hosted desktop service which is currently with Iris.  After being with them for years, we have gone through a significantly troublesome year and now are looking to scan the market for IT companies that provide solely or specialise in providing hosted desktop services for accountancy firms only.

Any suggestions or experiences shared will be greatly appreciate as there are plenty of provider around the web but not sure which ones to go for.

Sizewise, we require about 20 users so cost to us is also crucial.

Thanks in advance.

I use Hosted Desktop Uk. I've been with them for about 3 years and they are excellent. And all because several people on Aweb recommended them to me. I know they have a lot of accountant users.

Excuse my ignorance, but I’ve never been entirely sure of the point of a hosted desktop.

Can someone enlighten me?
Thanks

Means I have never had to install software or updates -worth it for just for that. On top of that that can work from anywhere and everything just works and back ups taken care of as well. Wouldn't be without it.

If your computer gives up the ghost, you can just login on another computer and there is all your data. Hosted Desktop UK do all the backups for you.
I've occasionally unwisely opened a dodgy email and then called support, who've immediately checked it out and reassured me.
I was in hospital for 2 weeks last year. A friend ran my payroll for me. I set up a login to my cloud data and he was able to get going from his own computer. He didn't need to do any travelling whatsoever. It certainly helped my convalescence knowing I could if necessary hand over all my accounts to a responsible person if I needed to just by giving them access to my cloud stuff.

Does it mean that I won’t be able to do any work without an internet connection?

Yes, just think of it as working on a server.

Lose connection to the server and...

When do you work without an internet connection though?

I never do anymore.

To help with offline working we have incorporated a service call cloud sync which takes files held on the Hosted Desktop and puts them onto local drives.

Sorry for the Qs ...

1. So does each user login to their own desktop?
2. Will I still need to buy multiple Moneysoft logins?
3. I’m thinking of getting Virtual Cabinet- presumably this will work?
4. Do you use the client doc portal HDUK offer? Any good?

Many many thanks!!

1) yes
2) no
3) yes
4) don’t use. We use pCloud configured as a portal. £300 for 2TB for life. Very good.

Hi James,

I’d not heard of pCloud, it looks relatively good, and cheap which is a bonus.

So do you use it as your DMS as well as portal (instead of, say, VirtualCabinet or SuiteFiles)?

Are you able to get documents signed through it (I couldn’t tell from the he website), or do you use another software e.g. Docusign?

Thanks

No to DMS - VC for that

No to signing - VC for that

This is to exchange documents only.

Every client has their own folder to which we invite them. They can upload and download with us.

We park signed / completed documents in there.

They put backups / scanned documents in there.

Nothing is now sent over email.

Fully GDPR compliant (even though outside EU).

Thanks James - your experience/knowledge is much appreciated.

1. Presumably there’s some sort of notification that tells you something’s been uploaded?

2. Do each of your staff have separate logins, or just share 1 generic account?

1) No - and that’s a weakness

2) one master account, invite staff as editors to the client folders, then they can invite clients from there.

Hi, Virtual Desktops, Hosted Desktops, Remote Desktops have been around for many years. Yes they are dependent on an Internet Connection if hosted externally. They provide each user with a individual desktop experience where their software is made available just like a local computer. Remote Desktops tend to be more secure because they are configured centrally. Updates to software can be done out of hours and servers should have automated backup. My company has been providing this service to accountants for many years. Please visit clearwave.co.uk/affinitydesktop for more information. We are offering the latest version of Windows in our product which is the Windows 10 experience.

I should also add that as a provider we also provide the other complementary services such as broadband, desktop support and VoIP as well as computer security. This means you only have one supplier which can help remove the 'passing the buck' situation.

We use Clearwave - www.clearwave-es.com - for remote desktop. Works well and support is excellent.

Hi all,

We have been looking in to all this too. One area of concern that pops up is how fully
compatible and supported our accounting software packages really are.

We'd like to run Server 2017 (on Azure?) so that it's like Windows 10.

But can anyone confirm (ie that they all this running without any fudges, glitches, workarounds etc) that the following all work "a-ok":

Sage 50 Accounts
Sage 50 Payroll
KeyTime
Quickbooks

Many thanks....

Hi, you are right to question this area. When rolling out the new Windows 10 version we check each software title. I can confirm that SAGE 50 Accounts does work as we have other clients using this right now. We have also tested Keytime. We have not tested Quickbooks or SAGE Payroll but would be happy to do this for you.

Just a quick note that Server 2016 which provides the Windows 10 Experience needs to be configured appropriately for remote desktop to support the number of users.
