I hope someone can help me as this problem is driving me mad. Doesn't help that I'm a tax person and up to my ears with tax returns!!
Our ISP is Demon and hundreds of virus infected emails are being sent to us daily, and this has been the case since November. The email software (EFS) logs into the Demon webmail mailbox to collect this mail, but as it is infected the antivirus software (Norton) steps in, quarantines the mail and leaves it in the Demon webmail inbox. Next time the email software collects mail again the same thing happens and as the number of infected mail increases this has the effect of slowing down the network server and eventually crashing it. I have reduced the timing of collecting our mail from every 10 to every 30 minutes and before each scheduled collection I log into the Demon Webmail Inbox and delete the suspect looking mail directly from there. This is working but is extremely time consuming. I have emailed Demon a number of times, to no avail. They keep suggesting using software such as Mailwasher and don't seem to grasp the fact that the infected mail is getting no further than the webmail inbox. Incidently the infected mail comes in in batches of 40 from addresses such as sage.com, europa-leisure.co.uk, ic24.net, colchester.gov.uk, etc.

Change ISP
PlusNet automatically quarantine any email with a virus and hold it for 7 days before deleting it. They send me a message telling me what they have done and who the mail appeared to be from.

Global Internet also have a similar service.

Both of these cost less than Demon, as far as I am aware.

Perhaps it is time to investigate a new ISP that handles viruses automatically?

ISP spam problem

ISP's must receive an enormous number of e-mails for addresses that do not exist (never mind those that do exist). This must cost them an incredibly large amount of computer processing time to delete and deal with. I suspect that the problem just grows over time, as more spammers target them. How do they cope with this, and what are they and the worlds politicians doing about it?

We had the same issues and did some research. We settled for Message Labs and now use their services to filter our email.

We were so impressed we now act as their reseller and may be able to offer you a trial.

Domain mangement
Obviously you do need the right software to manage SPAM as has been alluded to by other correspondents. However, there are some further things that could be done.

One option would be to purchase a domain (they are very cheap) and to set up your own e-mail addresses on it. Most SPAM is directed towards mailboxes of the commercial ISPs. The spammer mails every possible address at the known ISP domain.

Addresses are also collected via mailboxes that have been infected with spy software that provides the spammer with addresses but if you do not have an obvious domain, you are less likely to get SPAM. I have a domain with e-mail addresses and so far (over a year) have had no SPAM at all in my own managed addresses despite using them to contact some suppliers.

You need to know how Demon's SPAM filter is operating. I know that Tiscali's has an annoying habit of consigning some domains to SPAM just becuase it does not recognise teh domain. Once you know how the SPAM filter works, you may be able to develop rules in your software to pick up the items that would otherwise be left on te server.

Our ISP, Iomart, scans all my mail and if it finds a virus, we still get the mail header, but the content is replaced by a note of the virus identity and a warning.

Iomart is a more business orientated ISP and we use them because they host our website, but we certainly get fewer problems that seem to affect the more mass market providers.

Is it really webmail or POP3?
Hi Tracy,

As I understand it, Demon's webmail service is simply a web-based front-end to a standard POP3 account (I stand corrected if this is not the case) - and EFS is designed to collect from a POP3 account anyway.

In *theory* then, tools such as Mailwasher should work if you point them to the underlying POP3 server (pop3.demon.co.uk) with the right account details. Mailwasher won't care who the mail is sent to - but should do a reasonable job of cleaning things up prior to your EFS tool logging in.

As for Norton (hardly an awe inspiring product at the best of times), there should be a way of turning off just POP3 anti-virus protection, and hence stopping Norton from stepping in (although you'll need to supplement this with A/V protection elsewhere).

Finally - the very best answer is to take up some form of subscription based email anti-virus / anti-spam service which operates at the Internet level. This will prevent viruses and much spam from reaching your ISP email account in the first place.

Most ISPs offer this including Demon, and cost from zero to a few pounds per user per month depending on your Intenet access package. Either way, it's much cheaper than your hours of lost time.
