Voluntary VAT Visit

Is there such a thing as inviting VAT inspectors around voluntarily?

Didn't find your answer?

We've a client who is due a refund of VAT into six figures after we'd taken them on and submitted a 652.  In order to speed up the process, the client has been speaking to his main contractor who advised that previously, they'd requested a voluntary VAT visit, they then come out within 10 days and any refund is paid in a further 7 days.  This with a £1000 fee paid to HMRC.  With submitting a 652, the process could be quite lengthy in obtaining the refund as they're likely to request further info and perhaps a visit however with nothing to hide and eager to receive the amount, he'd be happy with a visit.

Having never come across this or able to find anything online, little confused.  Has anyone heard of this?

Not for that.

I did once invite HMRC down re agreeing the site works apportionment basis to use where we had works on roads/other common parts on a site, part of which serviced new build plots and part serviced existing dwellings, but there was no real time urgency re them coming to our offices as it was a site we were going to start but had not yet started.

Bet you didn't pay them £1,000 though, as is being suggested to the OP.

No, tea, coffee and a custard cream- but that was back in the pre austerity days, I cut the biscuits post 2008 to save circa £500 p.a.

Wouldn't it make more sense to go to monthly VAT returns?

Submitting form 652 suggests errors on earlier returns. As it's over the £10000 threshold, a monthly return isn't going to help.

Not to mention that what's done is done.
