Voluntary work with small business start ups

I hold AAT level 4 Accounting Qualification and have Affiliate status.  I currently do not work in finance, and need to gain the relevant work experience to achieve the MAAT status.  I am interested in doing voluntary work in finance, particularly working with charities that help small businsess or start -ups.  I am interested in producing the financial elements of a business plan (Balance Sheet, profit & loss, cashflow, forecasts) and helping the business or start up to liaise with banks or other funders to secure funding.  Are there any charities that would offer this sort of work?

Sounds like a good plan (in theory, at least) but to be honest you need to pick up the phone and make contact. Every charity is different.

Have you spoken to the AAT to make sure this is work you are allowed to do? Doesn't sound like you would be an employee and you presumably can't act as if you were self-employed - carrying out work for them rather than assisting someone else (albeit unpaid). (Other self-employment issues to consider also - PII, Money Laundering, etc..)

Good luck.

Do it - it'll show enthusiasm to a potential employer. My first accounts assistant came from exactly this route.
