I have had to change software providers due to the discontiuation of Quickbooks Desktop. My own company has by the most transactions in my client base. I struggled with opening balances yesterday but have bitten the bullet.
The operation is actually a pleasure to use.
Thank you to everybody who recommended VT and thank you Quickbooks for saving me a lot of money and time.

You've finally discovered why many of us have been banging on about VT for ten years or so!
It only gets better the more you use it & discover how many extra, useful, features it has.
We've used VT for a long time and like it very much. There was an increase in their renewal price this year (a perfectly reasonable one) but prior to that, the price had stayed the same for years.
We have been having problems with McAfee (our anti-virus s/w) conflicting with VT, which I have not yet resolved. This is strange because they had got along perfectly happily for at least the previous 15 years.
I heartily agree that VT Transaction+ is fantastic. I've been a user for about ten years now as a sole practioner and find it indispensable combined with VT Final Accounts.
With a little bit of tweaking VT Transaction can cater for job costing (by creating "work in progress" and "finished jobs" ledgers and posting a final journal on finishing a job) .
With some judicious tweaking using end of period trial balance journals you could have two or more people using VT thus simulating multi-user function.
You could have the chief bookkeeper with the main VT database and another person, say Credit Controller, entering sales invoices and customer payments.
phill collis
you mentioned some judicious tweaks.
If you have a moment could you share them on this thread.
Sales Controller
I assume that is achieved by using a duplicate set of
VT purely for all sales transactions.
Then the master VT just
has a total figure for invoices?
And VAT
Presumably the master set will record all bank receipts, the majority of which will be posted to the sales ledger control account.
look forward to hearing from others who have good tweaks and hacks.
Indeed just the simple day to day procedures to make life easy would be welcome.
For instance I create an expense account.
"AAA accountant please help me"
Where client is unsure of a posting it is placed here.
Located at the top of Expenses listing.
Some times a new stream of costs need to be tailored, initially they go to the AAA account .
Then, we the accountant use the very simple reposting technique.
Highlight, send, done.
No tippex no journal.
Or show client where the transactions should be posted in future.
One request
A 12 Month Profit and Loss Report broken into monthly columns.
Thank you
As another contributor mentioned, the first thing to do is to buy another licence from VT for the second user.
The principles are the same as how you would use self balancing ledgers in the old manual books days - one General Ledger with a Sales Ledger Control account and one Sales Ledger with a General Ledger Control account.
I don't want to go into the precise details here as it would entail posting a lot of instructions but just post journals as you would with self balancing ledgers.
The Sales Ledger database would hold output VAT details and these could be printed out as an audit trail for the VAT man.
If VT Transaction Plus were ever discontinued, I would seriously consider retiring. That reflects how much better it is compared with its vastly more expensive, complicated and less capable rivals.
Well, yes.... the time will come when the cloud gets hacked, or some other calamatous event such as Planet X passes by (every 3,600 years or so, give or take?) or mebbe the odd unanicipted solar flare.... good old VT! And they don't profiteer, which has a value.
I'm still trying to get past Xero's payroll shortcomings (it won't file P11Ds and the like, try as you might) and Freeagent's expenses sheets (CSV... not very user-friendly). VT does what it says on the can! And it does it well.

Thank you!
VT Software is your passion and I and countless others simply love it.
Let me say it again.
Thank you
Among the many pleasures of using VT is the sheer speed of it.
Waiting for Xero is frustrating. No one operation takes very long but when you need to be moving between journals, TB, account analysis, changing entity, etc. all the little delays build up and become frustrating.
I have been using VT for years. I don't recommend it to clients any more, as I find Xero, being cloud based, is more convenient.
However I use VT for my personal finances, and find it truly excellent.
As has been said, the annual cost is perfectly reasonable.
Just run it with the datafile in Dropbox or similar. Obviously this is still not multiuser, if that is what you wanted, although anybody with authority could access just not concurrently.
but see
philcollis earlier posting.
I am intrigued by his hack for multiple users
other users hacks would be of interest
It would indeed be interesting to know. If it works as I suspect, it sounds a good idea but would need strong controls and/or knowledge to avoid a complete horlicks so I was putting it aside for the general use case.
Of course the other item I omitted from my previous post is that, for others to have access remotely, they would also need to have a (paid for) copy of the program
Wish VT could do one-click sending tax return thing. Then I can finally get rid of the taxfiler whose price has been increasing too much.
