I have successfully submitted my first MTD VAT return through VT+. This means the software is registered OK with HMRC and that the client is also successfully signed up for MTD. So I am getting that bit right.
I have another client with very simple VAT returns on Excel spreadsheets. I have ticked the box in the Add-ins menu to enable MTD for VAT in Excel. According to VT+, I should get an MTD button on the ribbon - but I don't.
When I ticked the MTD for VAT in Add-ins, I got a warning saying "Compile error in hidden module". When I closed the warning, it took me to a request for "vtmtd password". It is not the customer activation number I have from VT+, so I am stuck.
I am using the Microsoft Excel 2003 version.
Any experience or advice?

Have you got the latest version downloaded ? My version on excel with the VT MTD drop down menu is dated "build 11 June 2019".
Mine is just above the VT XBRL button & in the properties says Built 11 June 2019.
I am using a new version of Excel and had to download the VT add ins again & I have today filed the first VAT Return under this method.
If VT support can't resolve your issue it is quite acceptable to use another MTD for VAT solution - you are not stuck with having to use just one.
For your client "with very simple VAT returns on Excel spreadsheets" I'll recommend our own bridging software - Easy MTD VAT (https://easymtdvat.com). It works rather differently to the VT solution. Instead of adding something to Excel (which is where your problem appears to originate) it instead imports the VAT figures from the Excel spreadsheet prior to submitting them to HMRC.
Just submitted 3 VAT returns under MTD using VT - an absolute dodle, can't see why people are having a problem
