What are the odds?

What are the odds?

Didn't find your answer?

I checked my diary this morning and thought there was an error ... it appeared I had meetings with two prospective clients, but both had the same name. I assumed it was a mix up with the appointments or names, but it turned out to be correct.

So we have two new clients, both have signed up on the same day, and both have the same name.

I wonder what the odds are, given that their surnames are not that common, but both are called David. which is a popular name.

"their surnames are not that common"

Are you saying that you saw two Davids with different surnames on the same day.

If you meant that they also both have the same surname, then you should have said "their surname is not that common". :)

OK, Portia

Rephrased as follows:

Both have the same name (in its entirety), of which the first name is quite popular, but the surname isn't that common.

Damn ... it still doesn't sound right! I'm sure you know what I mean, though. ;)

MLR

Did you do MLR checks on them? Maybe one of them is faking ;-)

If

if they share the same birthday you should buy a lottery ticket.

Good thinking, both of you ....

MLR checks already done, 50% payment up front, and both really nice guys. Sadly, they have different birthdays. If all people with this name are as pleasant to deal with, then I'll have a few more please.

I never buy lottery tickets ... maybe I should! :)

Probably a good guess. Do they both supply phonebooks?

Nope .... wrong ....

.. keep guessing.

The name isn't seen very frequently so it's odds on nobody will guess it.

Could it be . . .

Well there's two David Winch's on AWEB.  Was it us?

(On no! I am at risk of getting into the whole apostrophes issue!)

David

They aren't foreigners ...

... and they aren't homeless, or on benefits.

Triggle .. It would be quite a talking point to have a client called Rumpelstiltskin, but sadly .. it ain't these guys. :)

Maths

(F x S x R x N x Cs)squared

 where

F = chance of the Forenames matching

S = chance of Surnames matching

R = chance that they are in your region

N = chance that the need accountancy service

Cs = chance that they choose Shirley.

It's more complicated if you factor in the appointment day and time.

So I get .0005377457845599833124578741

But I may be wrong. ;)

The two Daves

You don't seem to have told us if any of these Davids actually turned up today. That would narrow things down.

Dave from Kilburn x

(It wasn't me if any of these turned up)

They both turned up this morning , and signed up immediately. It must be my charm ... (as neither appeared to be very desperate!). :)

I would be honoured to have David Winch as a client .. but it wasn't him, either.
