Depending on the size of the practice and the type of law it operates in then I’d be going for one of:
Leap
Clio
Action step
Proclaim

I have a personal preference for leap. But that's just because I've personally used it more often, but for the right practice I also recommend the others.

I have been FD at several law firms and currently a partner in a business that advises on law firm IT. There are several products out there, in addition to those mentioned.

You - rightly - distinguish between the Solicitors Accounting and the Solicitors Case Management needs of any package. Some are focused upon one aspect more than the other. Then, as accountants, we look to see what MI is available, so the business can be run well. That is often a weakness in these systems.

LEAP & Clio are mainly for small firms and you need to do your DD. E.G., it can be technically difficult and costly to move away from one of those packages if you outgrow them.

Action Step is good for slightly larger firms and is a newer entrant to the market. Similarly, there is Matters.Cloud, which is currently good for smaller firms but is developing well and aims to be the ideal package. It's certainly my current favourite.

The market is changing quickly, with lots of take-over activity and packages become end-of-lifed, even when promised that is not going to happen!

It is important to know what the firm wants and needs. LEAP has - in my view - a weakness in its link to XERO, which makes disbursements and income calculation a bit tricky. However, it has just launched its own MI package to sit on top of the PMS. Other MI packages are available to perform the same - or similar - function.

Happy to have an informal chat.

Thanks we have had a demo for Leap and Xero. They did not mention anything about launching its own accounts package.

Just to be clear. The new part of LEAP's offering, as I understnd it, is not an accounts pacakage but a reporting package that sits over and reports on the LEAP system. I have not seen it yet but hope to in the next week or so.

You do not say England or Scotland, however I believe LEAP can be made compliant for Law Society of Scotland purposes. (lot better than old days (1990s) when your choices were Pilgrim or Usher and nothing else was compliant)
