For an engagement, it is surprisingly difficult to give HMRC a ring.

Some kind of partnership, but let's keep it civil.

I wouldn't even have a one night stand with MTD, never mind get engaged to it.

I would suggest they are doing a really good job

Its the one topic which really engages the profession - in its widespread condemnation

As its heart is the assumption that business people are stupid and don't use digital tools which would make them more efficient, and accountants are complicit in keeping it that way.

Rather than accepting that business people make (on the whole) rational decisions for their own businesses and in the main those who would benefit from digitisation have already done it, or are getting there. All that is left are the ones for whom it make no sense.

The situation in a nutshell.

Pity that after some £2,000 million already, HMRC still don't seem to accept this. (Where has all that MTD money gone!)

What they're proposing is certainly not the status quo.

I think it might have been Ian Rankin (in one of the Rebus books) who had a character issue a threat by "making a proposal to engage your face with my fist" ... so maybe HMRC HR are avid readers of the maestro?
An Engagement Manager will be a person from whom official sound-bites emanate, but who has lost any ability to respond to questions (after aural surgery to close that channel).
Like cogs in a gear-box, engagement is uni-directional that either works or doesn't!

Have you also tried Val McDermid, I have been ploughing through her books in recent weeks, all the Hill/Jordan ones read (Wire in the Blood) , all Karen Pirie read, so now on to some of her others. (she can get a tad graphic)

That's the thing with a prolific author ... as long as you start with an early work from their oeuvre, you have a pleasant mountain of reading to climb (especially if there's a lockdown). I've got catholic tastes so, in addition to reams of murder mysteries, I try various fantasy novels as long as they're broadly set in reality. And being a Londoner by adoption, I enjoyed the works of Ben Aaronovitch - but recently have been navigating the weird worlds of Christopher Fowler (and his detectives, Bryant and May). Less graphic and with slightly obscure humour.

"HMRC MTD Engagement Manager"

One thing's for sure. It will come at some cost, to the taxpayer.

Whilst some of their staff might be lurking and working from home, they can still find time to ensure that their own environment remains protected.

Why is it engaged when it enjoys being whored out to the software companies so much?
