This just goes from bad to worse. I signed up to MTD for VAT and have no idea if I will be able to file. Leaves me with a horrible feelimg . The latest saga is that somehwere alomg the line I have been asked for my effective date of registration. When I look at the business tax account created for MTD the format has changed and no longer can I view the certificate. I emailed HMRC and they sent an answer as if I was under the old system . Does anyone know how I can now see my VAT registration certificate. Up to now the whole thing has been a complete and utter nightmare and HMRC have gone AWOL as usual . Four unanswered emaile to date. Customer standards clearly dont apply. So far all my clients seem to be doing is chasing their tails.

You can get it on the VAT portal, can't you ?
Click on "View VAT Registration Certificate".
If you can see the option to view "Submitted Returns" and then click on the "Previous returns" tab there is a link to the "old" HMRC VAT portal where you can access your VAT registration certificate. Be careful as seems that if you select the "previous returns" tab a 2nd time you get a "Page not found" message.
No sign of this on my "old" system if I follow the link to "previous returns" ... am I missing something?

The link to the VAT Certificate has gone! It was there a few months ago but now disappeared...
I would not be surprised if HMRC were getting this off the online system. One of their key bits of information for authenticating an entity is the vat registration date.
Trouble is unless you have had the foresight to have downloaded, and can locate, a copy of your VAT certificate then this can be an almost impossible requirement. e.g. my own firm was VAT registered over 40 years ago. It's not easy to determine a specific date that long ago.

Surely you just look at the framed certificate on your wall.
Fair point, suppose my VAT registration certificate is one to be proud of!Surely you just look at the framed certificate on your wall.

I don't know where you're all looking but I've just printed off VAT certificates for all the clients for whom I do returns.
Including one I recently deregistered.
The point is my dear that the system should not cause such confusion and should be simple to use . If we can’t do it easily is that fair to the average taxpayer and how do they cope with digital record keeping when they can’t even print out an email !
That's so weird because when I last viewed the certificate a few months ago I took a screenshot of the process so I could explain to someone else , but now when I log on it's definitely missing. I've signed up to MTD - have you ? If so, I can't imagine why my options are different. Very annoying!
No, I've not signed up to MTD yet. My first one isn't due until October so I'm hoping you will find the bugs in the system for me.
HMRC Sign in > VAT for Agents > Select client
And there it is - "View VAT Registration Certificate", bottom left of the Client Home Page.
What's the part of 'things changed to who joined MTD that you didn't get'?
Obviously if you haven't join MTD just yet finding a VAT certificate is really easy, but for us ,who joined MTD is impossible, and that was the initial issue on this topic!

You joined up today to berate me for a post I made a month ago ?
Don't look to me for help.
Ahaha, sorry don't take it personally... Is just a bit annoying looking for a solution and people keep mentioning how easy it should be, when the option isn't there anymore.
Alas, this option appears to have now been removed.
Only if you're on the New Improved HMRC gateway.
This is so funny. I have now asked HMRC the same question with their online help and they have told me I need to log in to the old portal ( I cant do this as the credentials are the same ) in other words they have given me an incorrect answer twice whilst Accounting Web answer is correct. I rest my case about MTD. HMRC staff don't even understand it . What hope has the man in the street ?
I am trying to send a client's VAT Return on MTD but am unable to find my VAT registration date. Tried following "payment history" but apparently I have no history despite being registered for some 20 odd years, so I have had to request a new certificate. Lets hope it arrives before the filing date!
This seems a daft situation as I have already given them the necessary authority from my client, so why do I have to do it all again?

Look on the home page after you've selected VAT from your list of services.
It's on there.
Once you sign your client into MTD the link to view the certificate disappears in the 'old' agent services.
It is still there for non MTD vat clients.
Maybe all the wonderful free MTD software that is out there will show it. (they don't).
I have also had the same issue. The links on the old system are definitely not there!
A suggestion that worked for me, providing you keep all emails, but I managed to locate the first email from HMRC advising that a VAT return was due for the period beginning x to x. Well that first x happens to be the effective date of registration.
I hope the above works for all of you having difficulty
Just an update. I called HMRC they said they are aware of the issue and that currently the only solution is to request a letter what I was able to do over the phone and hopefully only took another couple of days to arrive! Also got an email replying to my issue suggesting to follow the usual tutorial, even after I mention that that wouldn't work cause I already enrolled with MTD
