would you file these accounts

Client not reviewed

Didn't find your answer?

we use Iris openspace for sending acocunts and getting e-approval to file

we've sent accounts and tax returns to a client, he hasnt e-approved them, but has given email authorisation to file

on logging into openspace we can see that the client hasnt even opened the accounts or tax returns, and so cant possibly have looked at them to approve

whilst we have authorisation from the client to file, I feel a little uneasy doing so nkowing they havent actually looked at anything we've done

should we file, would you?

Id have a chat to the client myself about why their review is important.

Do they understand them? Do they need you to talk through the accounts in a gentle way? Or do simply not care a jot about them?

If not approved via OpenSpace I usually ask the client to confirm the IRMark of the return they are approving. Forces them to at least open the bundle and provides proof that they approved the same items that I filed.

Imagine there was a dispute and it was revealed that you knew the client hadn't looked at them.

I would tactfully put it to the client that for your firm's procedures, which you would need to show had been adhered to in the event of an audit, there needs to be a clear trail between what you have sent and what is being approved.

The client is going to have to get to grips with Iris Openspace at some point, so you'll need to invest a bit of time to tutor him.

I think you were lucky to get away with "acocunts", I'd have thought that the naughty filter would have caught it. :-)

The Companies Act 2006 (CA 2006) section 414 approval and signing of accounts) states that:

‘A company’s annual accounts must be approved by the board of directors and signed on behalf of the board by a director of the company.

The signature must be on the company’s balance sheet.'
